  1. 1. Bring Hall back?

    • No, I don't think it's a good use of money and roster space

I don't know what you could have asked more of an IF/OF than Hall's provided this year. He's done everything but play catcher, been a gamer, gave his best effort, and was pretty effective. The power is nice, too.

If his demands are reasonable, I very much look at Hall as a guy the Sox should re-sign. Could he regress, sure, but he's a guy who can play a lot of roles and I think he should be held onto as a quality 25th man.

He also hasn't been a pitcher.

His numbers are good, but he's been the beneficiary of a high FB/HR rate (about as high as his 35 HR season with the Brewers). He's a fine backup, but shouldn't be paid any more than that.

Also, is he a free agent after this season? Cot's Baseball Contracts says he has a $0.5M club option for 2011.

I've been extremely happy with how Bill Hall has done. As I mentioned in the Kalish thread, his numbers are pretty much where Mike Cameron's should be, Avg/HR/OPS, and while he's not a gold glover, I think his versatility is just as valuable as one. I'm not sure if he has a spot on the roster though. I see Lowrie as a cheap and effective utility infielder, and I still am under the impression that they will go out and get another outfielder. I'm not sure that the money he's going to be asking for is going to be worth it for a 2nd utility player/5th outfielder.

Bear one thing in mind -- Hall can hit righthanded, for power, and play all 3 outfield spots. Bringing him in if Cameron is either hurt or moved makes sense.

It depends on a couple things, but there can definitely be a spot for Hall.

Oh really? I missed that lol.

Lowrie is not a great option when he's a consistent injury risk. With 13 position players, 8 are starters, one's an extra catcher, two are extra outfielders, leaving two infield spots, which means there would be a spot for Hall as an infield backup.

IMO outfield depth is not the problem, given we have three starters (if none are moved), and adequate call up options in Nava, Reddick, and Kalish (if none of the starters are moved).

I don't think Lowrie's a constant injury risk. He's over the wrist, and while he's been out a ton this last time out he was sidelined with a sickness (mono), not an injury. And before that, it was just basically one big long wrist injury and its attendant complications -- that can happen to anyone. Wrists are tricky.

He's coming into his prime years and it's time to see what he can do. He looks like he's healthy at the moment, he deserves benefit of the doubt.

If I didn't think Hall and Lowrie could coexist on the roster I wouldn't have started this thread. Just as one factor -- Hall can play third base while Lowrie really has very little exposure there.

Will, you missed DH, there is one fewer than you suggested. I think there are enough big bat, no glove guys out there that the Red Sox will get one of them if Ortiz doesn't want to come back. And its not that I don't like or want Hall, but I'm not sure if he's worth the money. It depends what he's asking-- more than 5 would be too much.

Unless the Sox use a DH platoon with the aim of keeping Drew and Cameron healthy in the last years of their deals.

Unless they trade an outfielder and don't pick up another one, I think that they have 4 players that could start in most ballparks, so I think they will be able to give those guys more than enough rest.

Prototypical roster has 4 bench players -- catcher, backup 1B, backup IF, backup OF.

If Saltalamacchia can back up at 1B as well as catcher you can compress those roles and squeeze in another IF/OF.

Put a price on versatility. The guy can play just about anywhere, provides nice pop at the plate and has a wicked arm. Hard pressed to think of a reason to let go of a guy like that, unless of course, his asking price is too high.

He's gonna parlay this season into a starting job somewhere

Doubt it. I mean maybe some team is desperate enough at 3B to give him a look, but he's had his chance at a starting job and did consistently poorly. My guess is that most of the league sees him as, at most, a RH platoon partner for every position ever. That's worth starting AB's, but all over the freaking place, not really a starter.

I think a guy like Hall could easily pull down 4-5M/year as a bench dude next year though. He's going to be surprisingly pricey because his combination of versatility and power is danged hard to find.

I'm all for re-signing Hall if price is right. Hall has been all we could ask for and more off the bench this season. Id be perfectly happy having him as the utility player again next year.
