Yeah' date=' he will backup Martinez and probly get a couple appearances at 1B if they are in need.[/quote']Unless he is truly atrocious at catcher, I doubt he will see any first base. VMart will be at first when Lowell needs a rest. When Delgado gets here, the platoon will be Delgado and Lowell.

Unfortunately, I see this as a ill-advised move. Cash and the AAA catchers don't hit so well, but atleast they're not completely worthless defensively. I was happy about seeing Salty on this team as a long term option, but I do not seriously expect to see him perform well at this point in his career. Hopefully he doesn't see much time in the next two weeks before varitek comes back.

* Jarrod Saltalamacchia will catch tomorrow with Victor Martinez playing 1B. The plan is for Mike Lowell to play first base the first two games in Texas then DH on Sunday.

Saw him play Tues nite in Scranton for Pawsox. Didn't notice any problems with his throwing back to the pitcher. He's a big, powerful guy. Runs well.Got a couple of hits, but not for power. Played 1B the last few innings, which I thought was a hint of things to come. He seemed patient. The lefty starter Castro pitched pretty well for 6 innings or so. Control type of pitcher. He would fit in the BP right now. Bowden relieved, and did not look good. Control off.

The Scranton catcher, Montero, looks like a stud. About the same size as Salty. Bats right. Had 3 hits, including a HR. Showed some class, picking a bat up for a Pawsox hitter on a foul ball. Good kid.

The best hitter on the field was Nava. This guy has a swing like the young Yaz I saw many years ago. Bat cocked high just over the left ear. Smooth swing like Yaz that can't be taught. 3 hits, including a line shot over the RF fence.Pulls the ball better than young Yaz, who peppered the Big Monster his first year at Fenway. Nava will hit .300 anywhere, and should start in Boston next year in LF or RF. Played RF in Scranton.

IMHO' date=' Salty was a good pickup.[/quote']They got him for nothing. He is cheap, and he is an offensive upgrade over Cash. Could they have gotten someone who could provide more help to the 2010 team? Probably so, but they opted for Salty because they think he has more long term potential.

He reminds me a little bit of what Hermida was at the start of the season - low risk, high upside, low cost, but Salty's got a lot more potential than Hermida, and unlike Hermida he's never had a chance to prove himself (whereas Hermida proved he was not likely to reach his ceiling).
