Well, I can hate the guy, but he did some great things for his team and it's always sad when a guy who's been an icon passes on. My condolences to Yankee fans, and I never thought I'd utter those words.

Now who the heck do I loathe though? Someone tell me! Who's the face of the monolith in the New Toilet?

Isn't one of his kids nearly as evil as he is?

Just heard about it on "the Herd". Condolences to his family and all fans of the Yankees. It's the official end of an era, one that was good to the Yankee fans.

So he did have a heart after all?

So he doesn't have a heart cause he spent a lot of money to make his team good?

I just wrote a funny blog about this actually. Kind of like a fake news story I guess. If you want to laugh and shed some light on the topic (it's sad even if your nemesis for the past 3 decades dies) Check it Out!

Well His sons have been running the team for a while. He had been in bad health now for a while. Last year at the All-Star game he looked really bad.

i'm not sure what to make of him. on one hand he spent a vast amount of his time, energy and monetary funds to improve the yankees. on the other hand he wasn't a very good at it. he was twice suspended from baseball for laundering money for richard nixon and spending tens of thousands of dollars to run a smear campaign against dave winfield. and while he did spend so much money to improve the yankees, they did only win two world series in his first 23 years of ownership and didn't enjoy their success of the 90's until he handed over baseball operations to gene michael. if steinbrenner was still in charge of baseball operations, many of the yankees prospects at the time like bernie williams, derek jeter, jorge posada and mariano rivera likely would have been traded as many of the yankees best prospects were in the 80's

He'll never win a humanitarian award, but damn it, he was a great owner and a businessman. Granted, he had his flaws and his discretions, but the guy turned around a struggling franchise and made it the class of the MLB. I may never shed a tear for the guy as a person, but as an icon, he'll surely be missed.

I read the Globe article about Steinbrenner's death. What wasn't mentioned was that Steinbrenner financed the Steinbrenner Stadium and athletic complex at MIT, to honor his father, who was a great track champion and Olympian there in the 1920s. The Stadium is just across the river from Fenway.

While George was an egomaniac and obsessed with winning, he also had a charitable side to him that doesn't get mentioned very often.

I'll always remember when the Sox won the ALCS in Yankee Stadium in '04, stadium workers wanted to turn the lights off but Steinbrenner ordered the lights to stay on as long as the Red Sox fans in the building and the players wanted to celebrate "because they earned it". Classy, classy move.

It's driving me crazy how some people here in the northern NJ suburbs of New York are portraying this guy.

Way I see it, he is not the greatest owner of all time. Maybe up there, but I can't really say I feel like he is for sure. He is probably the most evolutionary owner of all time, but that's it.

I also can't watch TV or listen to sports radio today apparently. I was looking to hear about other stuff, but all the shows are going entirely to him today.

Oh well. I've heard he was a very charitable and friendly guy.

George was more than just an owner. He brought a personification of NY to the club. An in your face, win at all costs, money is no object owner whose motto was winning second, breathing first. Was the guy a saint? Hell no, as his 3 yr ban would say. But he rejuvenated a dying historic franchise back to its rightful place atop the sports pantheon. 7 championships in his tenure and a multitude of pennants his way. Every single ball player needs to pay homage to the Boss today. He made their free agency and salary structure what it is today. A truly capitalistic method of buying, selling and trading players with the highest price going to the players. And to the fans, his ENTIRE effort was devoted to the fans. He wanted NY to have a winner, even when it cost him millions out of his pocket.

In terms of a businessman, he took a 10 million dollar investment and turned it into a $1.5 billion dollar enterprise. He was a pioneer in the TV marketing industry and was able to put his final stamp on the Yankees with the palace that is Yankee stadium. Baseball fans need to pay homage to a man who put the game even further on the map than it was before. And all Yankee fans need to see that this man, although flawed, put the Yankees back into the center of New York's minds and hearts. And for that, I will miss him. You kept trying and you reached the mountaintop 7 times. God bless George, and from the millions of fans you helped generate, THANK YOU.

You never knew that? He was a huge contributor annually.

George was one of the most generous owners of all time, he just never publicized it. His image would have been improved significantly if he did, but he was humble enough to let his donations be out of the public eye.

good businessman, but didn't know baseball very well. of the 7 world series the yankees won under his ownership, 2 of them were while steinbrenner was calling the shots. he basically ruined the yankees by the 80's before he was banned from baseball for the second time and gene michael masterminded the yankees dynasty of the 90's. and if not for that run in the 90's, the yankees wouldn't be thought of in nearly the same light
