SF OUT for Downs.. I hope TOR lowers their demands.. He would be a fantastic addition.. the guy pitches tons of innings.. rubber arm and has a 1.02 WHIP.. I think we have a shot at getting Downs and Cody Ross.

The Marlins may be posturing..they aren't going anywhere..why hold on to Ross when you could get a middle rotation starter of the future in Dubront? Theo should have gotten us Werth..even if it had cost us Kelly..He would have us at least 2 or 3 games better right now with his defense, baserunning, and bat.. Theo dropped the ball. He has Renault..who is better than Kelley stuff-wise.. Sign Renault and Deal Kelly for Werth.. Philly can replace the pitching they dealt(Drabek and Happ) with a young 2-3 of the future in Kelly. Re-sign Werth and we have a nice OF of the future with Kalish/Ellsbury/Werth.

No way. Gotta think past this year. If we were a better lock for the playoffs, sure, get the guy who might put you over the top, but if you're trying to sustain a perennial contender you HAVE to know when to cut your losses. Everything we do needs to be about next year, or at least have next year in mind.

While I do agree with you that we should get Werth, now is not the time. Better to keep the prospects and sign him in the offseason.

Sox trying to move spare parts (Okajima, Ramirez, Hermida, MDC, Lowell) right now to make room for Bowden, Nava, Doubront, etc.

From Pete Abe from the Globe:

Several NL teams, #Mets among them, interested in the #RedSox relievers believing switch to NL would benefit them

Man, all our s***** players get sent to the NL and turn into aces.

Werth has not performed well as of late. His batting average is propped up majorly by BABIP (throughout the season; I'd guess it should be closer to .270) and his ISO has declined majorly from .302 in May to .202 in June and .167 in July. For reference, Bill Hall's ISO is .215 this season.

Interestingly, his slugging is .567 against righties, .398 against lefties - the complete opposite of his career numbers.

At this point, even if the only compensation we'd get for them would be a bag of balls, just f***ing do it. A scarecrow would be an improvement over that bust Hermida.

That's the right move.

But in the specific case of Hermida and Lowell, Theo needs to clear them even if he can't find a buyer. In Lowell's case he can hold out for the waiver deadline, but Hermida needs gone yesterday. There is no way in the time remaining between now and August 31 that he gains appreciable positive trading value.

Cafardo says Kalish and Richardson maybe on their way to Boston.

I find it hard to believe Nava or Reddick already on the 40 man roster. Not saying I wouldn't like to see the kid get a chance though. He's been solid all season.

MLB Radio is reporting Red Sox and Braves talking Ellsbury.

Interesting to hear some #RedSox & #Braves talk around Jacoby Ellsbury.

Hmm that came from nowhere. Isn't it like less then an hour before the deadline is up?

Posted
My guess would be the Braves just seeing what it would take to get Ellsbury. I don't even know what Atlanta has that we would want that would net Ellsbury? No, Heyward is not an option.

50 minutes and counting, unless you get some leeway?

Ellsbury going would be a shocker. I can't imagine his value is terribly high at the moment.

Posted
I would be shocked to see Ellsbury moved before the deadline. I've always thought they are going to wait until the winter to move him.

I'm in this camp as well. Let him play out this year, build some value and then try and unload him in the off season.

Rosenthal: Red Sox will not trade Mike Lowell. Maybe by Aug. 31

@BrentSGambill: Heard #RedSox #Braves talks about Jacoby Ellsbury are more than rumor.

Cafardo says Ellsbury will not be traded. Maybe it was just the Sox fielding offers and trying to send a message to Ellsbury?

Globe: OF Ryan Kalish and LHP Dustin Richardson are on their way from Pawtucket to Boston, which would seem to indicate a series of roster moves and/or trades are in the works
