Lester vs Lopez

D-backs starter Rodrigo Lopez and Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester are both on the path back to the win column.

It's been a much longer road for Lopez. The right-hander is 0-3 during his past five starts and has not won since May 15. He's on the mound for the second game of the series because the D-backs and manager A.J. Hinch elected to skip Dontrelle Willis' slot in the rotation at least in part to keep Lopez on his normal rest.

Lopez could use it. On Friday against the Cardinals, he yielded five runs on six hits over seven innings. He had retired 16 straight St. Louis batters before allowing Brendan Ryan's three-run home run in the seventh, his final inning.

"I still can't get out of my head that pitch that cost me those three runs and eventually cost me the game," he said after the game.

Lopez knows the Red Sox well. For his career, he has pitched against Boston 26 times (20 starts) and has compiled a 10-9 record with a 4.53 ERA.

As for Lester, he was unable to hold a five-run lead against the Guardians in his previous start and walked away with a no-decision. He gave up nine hits and six runs over six innings, walking one and striking out eight in a game the Red Sox lost in the ninth inning.

"I didn't get the job done," said Lester. "It's kind of a funny game. It's probably the best I've felt all year and I just overthrew some balls. didn't locate within the zone, didn't square a lot of balls up. I've got to do a better job."

Before Lester's past start, he had allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his previous nine starts. He still has not lost since April 18 against the Rays. In seven Fenway starts this season, Lester is 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA. Overall, opponents are hitting .209 against him.

D-backs: Roster changes

The outfield shuffle is on in Arizona. On Tuesday, the D-backs and A's completed a trade that sent outfielder Conor Jackson to Oakland and Minor League pitcher Sam Demel to the D-backs. ... Chris Young is off to the best start of his career with 44 RBIs in the first 64 games this season. He is on pace to drive in 111 runs this year. ... The D-backs lead the NL in seeing 4.05 pitches per at-bat during their first 64 games. Last season, Arizona ranked ninth in the category with 3.83. ... The first pitch of Monday's game against the Yankees has been changed from 6:40 p.m. MST to 7:09 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN. ... Despite a losing record overall, the D-backs are 17-16 at home.

Red Sox: Scutaro dealing with sore neck

Shortstop Marco Scutaro was out of the lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Diamondbacks after receiving a nerve-root injection Monday to alleviate pain and irritation he's been experiencing because of a pinched nerve in his neck. ... Right-hander Josh Beckett, on the disabled list since May 19 with a lower back strain, threw during Monday's off-day from 120 feet. ... Dustin Pedroia has one double in each of his past seven home games. ... Boston is 5-2 in Interleague Play this season and 132-104 all-time against the National League. ... Red Sox starters have pitched at least six innings in 14 of their past 15 games since May 29.

Worth noting

Chad Qualls is out as the D-backs' closer, with Aaron Heilman getting the majority of save chances at least for the time being. "I let Qualls know today that he won't close tonight, he probably won't close tomorrow night and we'll go from there," D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. ... The Red Sox have won five of their past seven games against the D-backs and are tied in the all-time series, 5-5. ... Similar to the Sausage Race at Miller Park and the Presidents Race at Nationals Park, the D-backs Legends Race presented by Henkel will take place at the end of the fifth inning at all home games beginning with the July 2 game against the Dodgers. ... Right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was placed on the disabled list with a right forearm strain before his scheduled start Saturday, is making progress, according to Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Welcome to Talksox!

Maybe its changed now VA. We get about 15 pages of posts on the game threads. Not trying to steal anyone from here at all..just seeing what the rest of the world is like. I suspect that a completely different subset of Sox fans are here.

SeaBeachFred posts there

Ummmm....yup! He is ......"passionate"....about the Red Sox. Actually, I am meeting him to catch a game in SF together....Sox - Giants on June 26. Does he come over here too?

He did, a long time ago. Let's just call him a character and leave it at that. As long as you aren't here to try and poach people, you're welcome here... I notice you're a mod over there. Sometimes a change of pace is nice.

Yeah, the admins made me a mod. If I can poach people from over here they offered to double my mod salary....and it would still be zero. I could not care less where people post, so no, I am not here for that reason at all. Just a change of pace.

So you guys are going to keep Freds situation here a clandestine affair, eh? Maybe you could provide me with some information with which I can extort a beer from him at the game in SF??

Welcome. Its a pretty basic Sox board around here. A good part of the discussion here is based on whether Drew was worth it, which stats are better to judge a player's effectiveness, and whether key players like Mcdonald/Wakefield/Scutaro/Dice-k/Ortiz are really key players. Oh, and there is always a discussion about which bad player to DFA first-- and the general consensus is Beltre.

And how much we hate Joe West.

A reasonable characterization of Talksox, except for "basic", and the last six words.

Half of the bullpen could be in that category before Beltre. He has certainly OVERPERFORMED offensively, but to say that he has been a disappointment defensively would be an understatement. Last I checked he was leading ALL MLB 3B in errors; and he is the only player I have seen in 50 years of following baseball who has lost a ground ball in the lights.

I don't remember either. All I remember is a shitload of DodgerBlues members and their problems somehow spilling over onto our forum.

Naw....Fred isn't a Dodger fan. His wife is an Angel fan tho..

No matter. I have plenty of extortion material with which to get those beers.

BTW: I noticed that "shitload" didn't get edited out. We cannot even post the name "Reddick" over there without it being censored.

Maybe all of George Carlin's words you cannot say on TV are OK here....:D

Never been a huge fan of censors really.

I think SBF just dragged some drama to this place from an old forum he posted at...a Dodgers forum. I don't really know why he posted there, but the bad taste lingered until he found somewhere else.
