Gotta admit most of the names of the guys drafted so far are excellent baseball names. Maybe we'll have a "Mickey" or a "Spike" before we're done...

Vitek should be way more ready than Renfroe. Renfroe was a HS project, a kid with significant upside as a hitter and a pitcher, who needed significant refinement. Renfroe is gonna be a short season guy, maybe for 2 seasons before he hits the long season road. Vitek is a college product, a finished product essentially. He'll probably start out in the NYP league, short season and depending on how he does, he might skip over the SAL next yr to the FSL. Gammons corrected himself on the MLBN by saying he'll convert to 3b first before trying him in the OF. Sounds like a gamer, and with him already agreeing to a contract, he essentially confirms what was already prognosticated. A slot or underslot guy in round 1, allowing them to overspend later on.

I gotta say, I like their draft thus far. They go slot with a hard nosed gamer in the first, then go upside in the supp round

I'll bet you money he doesn't play in the FSL next year.

The Red Sox selected 2B Kolbrin Vitek (20th), OF Bryce Brentz (36th) and RHP Anthony Ranuado (39th) with their three picks Monday.

Vitek, rumored to the Padres at No. 9, has already agreed to terms and is expected to move to third base immediately. The hope is that he'll stay there, though it's possible he'll end up in the outfield. The Ball State product has a polished bat that should allow him to move through the minors quickly. He's a future 20-homer guy. Brentz was another one of the best hitters in college this year. He has on-base skills to go along with possible 20-homer power, and he should be a pretty good defender in right field. Ranuado, an LSU product, was one of the players the Red Sox were often connected with at No. 20. His stock took a hit due to an elbow injury that took a toll on his velocity this year, but he has a great fastball-curveball combo when he's on.

Love the Workman and Cechini picks. Cecchini tore his ACL and was a target for the Yankees, but the sox took him before we could get to him. Workman is a big framed horse who looks like a hell of a pick out of UT. Dont know much on Coyle, sounds like an athlete, though.

Sox have grabbed #19 (Vitbek), #20 (Workman), #27 (Ranuado), #29 (Brentz), #46 (Cecchini) from BA's top 50, great draft so far

Will be interesting to see if they sign them all.

I love the Chris Hernandez pick. (LHP Miami) I've watched this kid pitch and he knows how to use what he has.

Except wasn't he the one who blew the 5 run lead in the 9th inning against BC in the ACC tournament?

I don't know, but he's got great numbers. And speaking of ACC pitchers, we just drafted Matthew Price from VA Tech, a teammate of Jessie Hahn and another high profile potential top 50 guy. Another ACC pitcher.

This time it's a high school RHP Tyler Barnette

Barnette, a Charlotte recruit, offers less projection but sits 87-91 mph with his fastball and has looseness in his delivery. He fills up the strike zone with his fastball, which is not the case with his curve. While the breaking ball has some shape, he lacks a feel for using it or commanding it.

Thus far the sox are going with another shock and awe approach. They wont sign them all, but boy do they have some talent. The Yankees and Sox couldnt be taking more different approaches. The sox are going for the higher signability guys early, knowing they wont get them all. The Yankees are going a bit over slot on some guys, but all have significant athleticism, leaving them free to grab some low hanging fruit later on. Different models, but I like this Yankee draft thus far and I think sox fans should be very pleased with theirs thus far

Jacob Dahlstrand, highschool RHP from Texas

Jacob Dahlstrand requires polish, but it's easy to dream on the projectable righthander. He's 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds and already throws an 88-93 mph sinker. His secondary pitches and command are erratic because he lacks a consistent release point and often falls toward the first-base side of the mound. He has committed to Houston but may be signable.

5th round: Henry Ramos RF. HSer from Puerto Rico

According to Perfect Game, Ramos is yet another high upside high school kid. Has a ton of power potential but not a lot of baseball experience as he mainly played soccer.

I like the picks of Ramos and Cecchini from a risk reward standpoint. Maybe there is a 10-20% chance that they work out, but if they do, they both have a chance to be stars.

Cecchini was a first round talent prior to tearing his ACL. I doubt the sox sign him, seeing as he is still rehabbing and is probably at his low point in terms of stock. But if the sox were to offer him late 1st round money (like $1.2 mil) he might bite.

Also, remember, the commish is cracking down on teams who break the bank in the first 10 rounds, I expect the next 10 to have their share of signability guys
