In case it wasn't clear, I wanted that drilled into everyone's head.

Anyone still doubting the big man? I'm sure not. Not only did he have another HR, but he walked twice. He's always been a slow starter (March/April are his worst months across the board) and after that wrist injury, I think it's safe to say it was nothing but a slow start. Last year he had trouble getting his bat speed back up, common with wrist injuries. This year it looked like a really slow start, but now he really does look like vintage Ortiz. I don't think there is anything to be worried about. As some others have pointed out, I'm sure he'll start seeing a lot more walks now as pitchers start to work around him knowing he can take them deep.

With this 7 inning, 1 run performance, now 2 of our starters are sub-3.00 ERA. If Beckett and Lackey can start pitching like their capable of this pitching staff will be scary good.

need a first baseman to replace Morales. Papi? Pujols? Cabrera? Papi' date=' if you believe in Ponce De Leon.[/quote']

I've had Papi as Util in my other fantasy league for most of May. They approve.

Lester is the rock in this rotation. Buchholz has been good and lucky. Those two guys have been the stoppers. They need a third consistent arm to become a sustained winner

Big chance one of Lackey and Beckett (or both) step up and fill that role.

Lackey's a known "June and on" pitcher, and they'll probably figure out what's wrong with Beckett sooner rather than later.

Just got back from Newport..gorgeous day with my little girl..lot's of nice pictures. I come home and the beautiful day is topped off by a Red Sox blowout. They were losing 1-0 when I left. That Portman mojo really did get the bats heated up!

I really hate not being able to watch or hear Red Sox games. At least I can listen to Twins games. Bleh, I'm so behind, but looks like Lester's pitchin' and Papi's hittin'.

my vote is for Lackey as well. Sounds like Beckett may be out awhile

Funny, maybe they should have thought about, considering their two other big pitchers are also poor starters. How painful would it be if we have slow starts like this for the next five years?

Sea Dogs are on NESN today

As Americans, we should be guaranteed the right to sit in the backyard with a beer and a burger and listen to a ballgame on the radio on Memorial Day.

Yet inexplicably, the Red Sox are not scheduled to play today.

NESN is saving the day, however. They'll have the New Britain-Portland Class AA game at 1 p.m. Casey Kelly is pitching, too.

Kelly is experiencing some growing pains this season. He's 0-3 with a 4.32 ERA and in his last 12 innings has allowed seven runs on seven hits and six walks. But he's 20 and pitching in a league with a ton of prospects.

Ryan Kalish is starting to make a case for himself. He has seven hits in his last nine at-bats, two of them home runs. He is hitting .288 on the season with eight homers and 29 RBI in 40 games.

So catch the Sea Dogs today.

Just in case anyone is interested in seeing Kelly and other Sox prospects play.

They probably thought Lackey's issues stemmed from poor conditioning. But he really does have that reputation.

I don't know if it's hubris, ie "we can do what we want", or stupidity, but there's no excuse for not having the whole league play today.

My vote is that JimEd never start another game thread.

If no one minds, I'll guess I'll do it unless someone else wants to?

Wait until 6:50 and then go for it.

YZ, can't we just log on under peoples names and do it?

Cool, may have a late start anyway:

Tarp still on the field at Fenway

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 1, 2010 05:53 PM

The skies cleared considerably over Fenway Park for a while. But it's raining and the tarp remains on the field. So the bad weather has yet to pass.

That would suggest that the game is not going to start on time. But the gates are open and the intent is to play. We will keep you posted on the blog.
