Actually' date=' team sources said that V-Mart was still very sore as of last Friday.[/quote']

then the monday after that he said the pain was getting better and it's a day-by-day thing

no beltre in the lineup today (3-6, 2B against Hunter). how is it that he was healthy enough to play in the all-star game, but not healthy enough to play tonight?

Hermida did well in A ball today. Sounds like Nava will be the casualty when Hermida gets promoted early next week

sounds like? Voices in your head telling you this?

more good news on v-mart

Victor Martinez underwent a scan of his fractured thumb Thursday.

"It shows it got a lot better," he said. "I think from this point it’s just seeing how it feels every day. Hopefully I can wake up tomorrow with no pain. I’m just taking it day by day and just seeing how it feels." Martinez also took a few swings with a bat and put a glove on his thumb for the first time. The hope is he will be able to rejoin the Red Sox in about two weeks.

rotoworld said it actually. They'd have to pass McDonald through waivers if they kept Nava up

McDonald can play center, and hits left handed hitters better. Nava hits right handed hitters better, so does Hermida. If they plan on using one in platoon, Hermida replaces Nava's skill set a bit better. But Hermida was hitting .217, whereas the other guys are hitting .273 and .305 respectively. Its pretty clear to me that Hermida is the odd man out.

I was at the SeaDogs game yesterday. Hermida and Delcarmen looked fine. Hermida had 2 hits, and was making good, hard contact. Delcarmen started but only pitched 1 inning (albeit, a 1,2,3 inning). According to one of the Boston scouts next to me, he was only hitting 90-93 mph. With that said, he got 3 ground outs and looked decent.

The best answer to the roster issue would be a trade, wouldn't it? I don't trust that Nava, Hermida or McDonald clearing waivers.

I think any of the three could be moved for a decent reliever or as part of a deal for one.

nava has a full set of options.

That said, he's more dependable than Hermida and I don't want him sent down.

I personally like to see Hermida shipped off. He has some value, especially because of his numbers with RISP this year. His stats are very interesting-- look at his OPS in certain roles:

Bases empty .569

Runners on .723

RISP .869

RISP with 2 outs .937

Bases loaded 1.667

It would have been nice to see Beckett last night getting back in form relieving Doubront in a high leverage situation instead of that no-name kid from Pawtucket. But Baseball is different these days, and expensive pitchers are wasted in AAA for a week so they can buy the kids down there expensive dinners. No wonder ticket prices are out of sight in Fenway. Aside from that, you have to question Tito's bullpen selection in that high leverage situation. It cost them.

The other point is this new guy Patterson batting 2nd. What's he done to warrant that? Not much, from what I've seen. Nava is the guy who seems to be the natural hitter, and belongs at the top of the order. The difference maybe is Patterson cost the FO more.

All the injuries are a killer for this team--especially Pedroia and Beckett. And then the AAA rehab, which stretches it out further. The Yankees have gained about 7 games on the Sox since Pedroia got hurt. The only hope for the Sox is if injuries catch up to NY, which may be inevitable to some of the older players.

lowrie should be ready to return any day now and he could really improve the production we're getting from bill hall at second base.

Jed Lowrie (mononucleosis) has progressed nicely during his rehab.

Lowrie homered Friday night and is batting .435 over 23 at-bats during the rehab. "He’s doing really well,’’ manager Terry Francona said. "We got a report from Bruce Crabbe that was about as upbeat as we’ve seen in a long time. The light’s kind of come on with Jed. He feels like he’s turning that corner, starting to see the player that we’ve all talked about. He’s not dragging, he doesn’t feel fatigued. I think he feels pretty good about himself.’’ It sounds like Lowrie could be back before Dustin Pedroia, and if that's the case, he could see a decent amount of playing time at second base.

Patterson is a weird case. He's a career .369 OBP guy in 1532 PAs at AAA. He's got a career .856 OPS too, which isn't bad. Also, that's not an insubstantial sample size. Compare that to Darnell McDonald's career .760 OPS in his AAA career (3718 PA).

I think he's a decent pickup for this team considering they are at PLAN E or PLAN F for their roster.

It is frustrating to have to be talking about any of these guys though, so we agree there.

They can win the WC without having to catch the Yankees. These three teams are really very competitive, actually. Two of them will make the playoffs, one of them won't. That might be the Sox this year, and it would be largely due to injuries.

There is absolutely no reason to play Patterson instead of Hall/Nava/Mcdonald. Those guys have kept this team together despite all the injuries, and they deserve to be playing. That, and their 2010 numbers are better.

Manny Delcarmen returned to the mound at Fenway last night with the win, a shutout inning, and 0 walks or hits. If he can get back to form, this bullpen isn't in as rough shape as we thought it was.

Beckett to return Friday!

Big news, Doubront and Wakefield finally can get some help in the later spots in the rotation.

Interesting note-- while Clay Buchholz has been on the DL, he's suddenly picked up the best ERA in the AL. Considering that the only pitcher within spitting distance--Cliff Lee-- also missed some starts, he has a decent shot at the Cy Young.

Beckett: 'As far as I’m concerned, yeah, I’m ready to start on Friday, but it’s not the end-all, be-all.'

No, Josh. It's not "the end-all, be-all". You take your time, I'm enjoying Tim Wakefield time.

Somehow, I think this year might have meant more to Josh if a contract had been on the line. He and AJ Burnett have the ability to waste talent at times.

When Beckett was pitching this season, he was doing worse than Wakefield. I think its perfectly reasonable for him to take his time to make sure he doesn't lose his first game back.

The point is true, but frankly, it's Beckett's fault for the disappointing season he's gave. He certainly did well to grab that contract extension. I hope he can come physically ready next season, since he hasn't in recent years.

I hope so too.

I think the Sox handle him very carefully because they have him longterm and believe he will have a lot to give over that period. That means any minor pain is handled very seriously. They seem to pride themselves on giving their guys a day off whenever they need one, maxamizing the need for organizational depth.

So since, unless something goes wrong AGAIN, Lowrie's going to be making a (probably brief) appearance back in the big leagues sometime in the next couple weeks, and with Pedey still out, it's time to ask an important question.

Lowrie SS

Scutaro 2B

Or

Scutaro SS

Lowrie 2B?

Pros to Lowrie starting at SS:

Natural position with most of his experience there

Scutaro has far more experience at 2B than Lowrie does.

MLB SSS UZR/150 miles better than Scutaro's largely league-average rate -- may well be the better defensive SS

Pros to Lowrie playing 2B

Possibly an "easier" position for a recovering player who hasn't played in awhile

Projects as a better position for Lowrie long-term

Scutaro is "established" as our SS and Lowrie's return shouldn't change that before he's earned the privilege by proving himself healthy and effective.

I still believe that long-term Jed still has every chance to surprise us by being a competent, healthy SS in the longish term. Yes, the injury definitely sucked and really hurt Lowrie's chances to make an impression, but I suspect all the talent he ever had is still there.

And yes, I'm not stupid enough to think Lowrie will play every day as soon as he's called back up, they'll monitor him carefully and only start him when they think he's healthy, he probably starts off as the utility man, bla bla, yeah I get that. I can be a little gullible and overenthusiastic, but I'm not prepared to admit to being THAT stupid, but Pedroia's injury does give him a window to reestablish himself if he can get fully prepared in time.

And yeah, I'm gonna hear the argument that he should stay in AAA, but the guy's going to be dealing with the physical stress of being a ballplayer whichever team he plays for and that's the only reasonable question about Jed Lowrie right now, at least until he gets back on the field and presents us with other ones. With Pedroia out I'd far rather have Lowrie work out his rehab in a utility role backing up Scutaro and Hall, or even starting over one of them, than starting in AAA with almost exactly the same physical rigors (more, since in Pawtucket Lowrie's the everyday guy) and letting Patterson hit for the big club. The upside for a quicker Lowrie callup seems higher to me, and we have some ground to make up.

I have a bad feeling that at the end of the day Patterson will still be starting at 2B

Supposedly Pedrioa is less than two and a half weeks away.
