He's been taking shots and stirring up things since he got here.

i think he's covered the red sox for so long from the perspective of a yankees fan that he's having trouble just turning it off now

I don't thinks so. He has made plenty of anti-NY posts and comments in his articles. I think he has a pretty objective style. Which is interesting. He's a Bristol County (Ma) native from a working class family and attended UMASS. As well, I like him because he's not a pretty boy and he is in no way into self promotion.

It's funny. About a year ago a Yankees fan here (Y228?) said that Boston was about to get a really good baseball reporter in Abraham. I admit that I was skeptical, but since then, he has become part of my daily routine. I don't agree with everything he says, but always enjoy reading his stuff.

One other thing, while a lot of anti-Globe/Boston.com blowhards give him s***, he has never the less continued to interact with the Boston fan base every day.

There is a lot to like about him.

in my opinion, he's a step above weei. he says stuff sometimes just to get a reaction

i remember him saying something about how all yankees fans were frauds for rooting for a-rod's 600th home run and thinking how much of a d-bag he was then and nothing he's done since has changed my mind

What kind of doctors do we have. They reported that there was a lot of healing and it is not a weight bearing bone. It was my understanding that when a bone does heal it is stronger at the point of the break than it had been previously. How could they make such a miscalculation?

Imagine you had Pedroia for a patient and he was making it clear he wanted you to tell him he could play on the foot.

That's how.

Pedroia is having surgery to implant a screw in his foot. He should be back in time for spring training. These fractures can cause avascular necrosis of the foot, which means bone death. If that happens, then he's going to have some serious arthritis. Typically, surgery is meant for a mal-alignment, meaning that he is going to be at more risk for the avascular necrosis. Hopefully he doesnt have it, but by not fixing it and it now needing significantly delayed surgery, he might run into that issue

I have no link but Merloni just reported on The Baseball Show that Mike Lowell has a fractured rib.

Non-displaced fracture of the 6th rib. From Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

Lowell has non-displaced rib fracture

After undergoing an MRI and CT scan Friday, it was been determined that Mike Lowell has a non-displaced fracture in one of his ribs. The injury, which doctors tell him shouldn't prevent the first baseman from playing, was suffered in the third inning of the Red Sox' Aug. 20 game against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park when Lowell collided with Toronto baserunner John McDonald on a play at first base.

"I'm medically cleared to play and as long as it doesn't bother me it should be fine," said Lowell, who was in the lineup for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox. "There's really nothing to do. I feel fine. I feel like I'm swing the bat pretty well lately. I think I feel it more when I go through my tee routine and I get a number of swings in. That's when I feel it. Overall I think it's OK."

Lowell said the team had offered a CT scan after Lowell experienced continued discomfort, but he declined, believing that it was going to get better. He was examined by both the Sox and Tampa Bay Rays' team doctors. The rib that was injured is toward the middle of the chest, just to the left.

"It was bruised for three or four days, and after a week went by it felt like it wasn't getting any better and it was bothering me to get up and when I was sleeping and stuff," said Lowell, who has hit .270 in the 11 games since the collision with McDonald.

"I don't think it was getting any worse, but I expected to get better and it just stayed that way. The first couple of days after I expected it to get better. But I had an MRI and they told me the MRI that the No. 6 rib, close to the chest area, was the one with a non-displaced fracture."

he also has nothing to lose and is retiring at the end of the year
There's nothing to be risked from playing with nondisplaced rib fractures other than pain. Ellsbury is a fragile wuss.

i can't tell if you're being serious or not
I'm completely serious. Football players play with broken ribs all the time. This guy has missed a 6 month season. Unless he has some other medical condition preventing him from healing, it is inexplicable that he has missed this much time. I'll defer to jacko on this, but Ellsbury didn't have a good reputation in the minors for issues like this.

i don't think he would have been very valuable playing at 80% considering running at full speed is what makes him valuable in the first place. he tried to play through the pain and aggrevated the injury worse

as for his repuation in the minors, i followed him since he was drafted and i never heard about him milking injuries

I'm not making the last part up. He had a reputation for having less than full commitment. I don't know if that meant milking injuries. At 80% he would have had over 40 steals and saved us from putting up with Eric Patterson.

i don't doubt that you heard rumors about him from somewhere but i never heard anyone doubt his commitment until he got hurt this year

i don't think it would have done much good for him to try to play through the injury. even after all the time he gave it to heal it fractured again within weeks of playing in games

It wasn't a rumor. Tito made a statement at some point last season that he believed that Ellsbury had a better understanding of the type of commitment (and he used the word commitment) to be successful at the major league level. After playing that clip, the commentator said that Ellsbury did have a reputation in the minors regarding commitment.
