The pitching heavily favors the Red Sox this weekend. Them winning three out of four is a legitimate possibility.

i think the red sox lucked out with lester facing mosley because lester hasn't pitched well lately. i wouldn't be surprised if the series comes down to that last game and honestly it could go either way

The Sox have to have some big innings and score some runs. That task has just become markedly more difficult with their best offensive player now out for the season.

Beltre can't be counted on to hit a grand slam every night.

damn. that really throws a wrench into my calculations. guess we'll have to settle for only winning 110 games this year :(

Pedroia begins rehab on saturday with pawtuckett

ARLINGTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been cleared to begin his two-day rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Pedroia met with foot specialist Dr. George Theodore on Friday in Boston and got the news he needed.

"He got the go-ahead from the medical people. The doctors looked at him," manager Terry Francona said. "He's going to play second base [saturday], play [designated hitter] Sunday, take Monday off because we have an off-day and hopefully join us on Tuesday."

The PawSox play the Buffalo Bisons on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. ET and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at McCoy Stadium.

Pedroia originally went on the disabled list June 26 with a non-displaced fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot in a 5-4 loss to the Giants the day before. Now it appears that he'll finally be able to rejoin the Red Sox.

"Needless to say he was very excited," Francona said. "I got a text from him that said, 'I'm back.'"

Pedroia, who hasn't suffered any setbacks this week while running, is hitting .370 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 295 at-bats this season for the Red Sox.

Beckett, Ellsbury, Cameron and Okajima need to take the season off. They shouldn't be trying to come back, to perform poorly, and keep hurting themselves and the team. Its time to give up on Beckett for Doubront, Ellsbury for Nava, and Cameron for Kalish.

This may sound ridiculous to some, but the Sox seemed to be grooving along better without Ellsbury in the lineup and in the field. I don't wish the man any harm, but for what we need the rest of this year I'd be just as happy to have Kalish, Nava, McDonald, and Drew as our outfielders than to have Ellsbury out there misjudging fly balls and thus having to dive all over kingdom come to catch them, scampering dramatically on the basepaths when he doesn't really need to in his forever quest to get his individual steal stats as high as possible, swinging as though he's a power hitter thereby resulting in his popping up into the outfield, rather than just slapping singles around and getting on base like he should in Ichiro-fashion, and being completely unable to make good throws to the plate from center when the times comes a la Johnny Damon.

I know Ellsbury brings us speed, but he's not that great of a fielder or thrower, and his approach at the plate isn't intelligent. Get well soon, take the rest of the season off, and then hopefully Theo packages him and a couple of young guys up for some proven talent next season. I think Ellsbury's ship has sailed with the Boston Red Sox.

Yes, by all means let's criticize Ellsbury for not playing hurt as often as we like, and then criticize him again for failing to play brilliantly through injury when he is on the field. Because the Truisms of Fan-Dumb must be upheld..

He doesn't have a good arm, but otherwise he's an above-average centerfielder. I don't understand why everyone is s***ing on him after one bad year last year. UZR needs 3 years to be statistically significant, and according to UZR he was quite good two of the past three years.

And Ichiro gets on base by slapping singles. He doesn't walk very much.

So' date=' Patterson will be our CFer the rest of the way. Yuk!!![/quote']Seriously, Did anyone hear what they plan to do in the OF. Right now we have Drew, Kalish, Hall, McDonald and Patterson. I'd rather see Nava again instead of Patterson. Patterson stinks offensively and defensively, and he is not a smart base runner either. At least nava can get some hits from the left side. What is the word on Cameron? Is he done for the season?

At what point do you bite the bullet, decide you're a contender and call up Che-Hsuan Lin as your defensive CF? He's the best guy in the system for the job. It's not like anyone's asking him to hit anway, he'd play everyday, and he's doing alright (not worldbeating but OK) in Portland so he's theoretically "in range."

Patterson has no future in the majors.

Oh, Lin's a prospect, the big question is does he at least have enough pop in his bat to get the ball over the third baseman's head. Everything else is about as well established as a guy in the minors can be.

This team already has Hall/McDonald/Kalish who can play defense in CF. It simply makes no sense for them to play a guy like Patterson with bad defense in center, who is a career .600 OPS hitter when they have other bad defensive centerfielders who clearly out-hit him.

And I always believe that bringing up a guy early is never a good thing, and that's no different with Lin.

This team is barely contenders, though that is due less to their own performance and more to the solid performance of NY and TB.

From watching them play the past few days I would say the Sox are roughly at the same level as TEX, and that is without Youkilis and Pedroia, and WITH Texas playing with a "this year" mentality (having acquired Lee, Cantu, etc.,) and the Sox clearly looking toward the future. They seem to refuse to give up any potentially useful pieces for the next few years for an obvious this year improvement. I'm okay with that at this point.

There's no point in brining Lin up, honestly. He can't hit enough at this point and although he's a good CF I think he is someone we might see a year from now at this point, but not in 2010.
