Nothing official, but Terry Francona just said he thinks Victor Martinez will be ready for tomorrow's game.

Francona also heaped praise on the injured players who have stayed with the team, calling their efforts "extraordinary."

He went so far to say there was too much coverage of Jacoby Ellsbury and not enough of Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Varitek, etc.

Those players, he said, went beyond what was expected of them.

"It makes me love my job," Francona said.

Something I found surprising-- This team has all these injuries, but its not the guys we should have been expecting. Its mostly the old guys who are usually hurt that have been sticking playing.

Sure Lowell has been taking his time, but Wakefield, Drew and Ortiz-- the three biggest concerns-- have been healthy. Dice-k has given far more production than anyone could have expected. Varitek broke his foot, but its not like last year when he was injured due to strain, same with VMart. Beltre came back from a trainwreck season lined with injuries, and this year he's fine. Lackey has had his healthiest start in a long time. The bullpen has been healthy-- although maybe that's not exactly a good thing.

He was walking in a boot, so he wasnt completely immobilized. But when you are a prime athlete and dont run for a month, there will be some atrophy. I know he doesnt want to rehab, but it is best for him to take a bit longer.

Fun fact-- While VMart was on the DL, Dusty Brown, Molina and Cash combined for a grand total of 0 RBIs and 2 runs. Eric Patterson so far has an OPS of .407 versus lefties-- no that's not a typo.

There's a reason why Pedroia wants to skip AAA.

During a visit with Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday, Dustin Pedroia (foot) was told to rest until he undergoes a CT scan on Friday.

Pedroia is obviously chomping at the bit to ramp up his rehab, but Yocum gave him a dose of reality. "He kind of scared me a little bit," said Pedroia. "There's nothing really that I can do. Just time's gotta heal me. He kind of told me I can't play unless I feel no pain, which isn't good. ... I didn't realize how serious it was and how long it's going to take." Friday's CT scan should give an indication of how well the bone has healed, but until then, he has to be smart. Another fracture would result in surgery that could cost him part of next season.

victor martinez is reporting no pain when catching. so much for him needing to start games at 1b and dh

pedroia is on schedule, which means he should return in about a week

depends on the CT and with the report from Tito, I highly doubt he is in Boston on August 3rd. He'll have his CT on friday which will allow him to perform baseball activities again

I highly doubt it .... from the globe

But when Pedroia tried jogging yesterday, his foot felt tender. A visit to Dr. Lewis Yocum today set him straight — 6-8 weeks is 6-8 weeks. Not 4-5 weeks.

Makes Lowrie's return timely. He might need to hold down 2B until September. Certainly I trust Jed to do that more than I'd have trusted Eric freaking Patterson.

Between Lowrie and Hall we should be able to piece together a 2B platoon and make it work out.

Pedroia needs to stay out until he is 100%. Lowrie and Hall can manage until then. No need to risk damaging himself worse for the long run.

oh' date=' i heard his timetable was 6 weeks - in which he'd be back in a week. but if it's 6-8 weeks, that's different[/quote']

It all depends on if he is healing. The bone he broke has a tenuous blood supply and if it gets disrupted, the bone itself can die, which would require more surgery

Dustin Pedroia (foot) was able to run 90 feet 10-12 times as wells as take grounders before Friday's game.

The second baseman also had a third CT scan on his fractured foot, which showed significant healing. "It went real well,’’ manager Terry Francona said. "It shows significant healing. Not healed, but good healing. More importantly, I think his exam went really well. So he’s got the go-ahead to start ramping up the running again.’’ Pedroia had to back off his running earlier in the week after experiencing soreness, so it will be important to see if he has soreness following Friday's activities. There's currently no timetable for his return.

if he stays on his original 4-6 week timetable, he should be ready to play within the next couple of weeks

From GordonEdes

Ellsbury at least one more game in Pawtucket, as Francona says he still "feels it". Evaluated today, play in Pawtucket Tue, then re-evaluated

The guys on WEEI are killing him. They keep saying.. what's the good in him playing full games in AAA when the team is trotting out Patterson in CF.
Posted
Vmart skipped a rehab start, and Pedroia is planning on it. It makes no sense for Ellsbury to be in Pawtucket if he's good enough to play. Especially when Patterson is in CF with horrible defense and hitting .200.

The WEEI guys are idiots. He's playing in Pawtucket because of Theo's decision' date=' not his own.[/quote']

Um, yeah. It's an organization decision.

Patterson does not need to be in CF. There are options on this roster.

Ellsbury needs to regain his timing and technique in AAA so he stands the best chance of being productive when he returns.

Not a very difficult concept to grasp. Let's hope for the best.
