Prior to 2003/2004, the rules didn't ban the use of steroids. Sure, Giamatti sent out a memo in 1991 (ish) stating the league didn't condone the use of controlled substances, but the league never took proactive action prior to that offseason.

You chose to address my question with a rhetorical one, but you avoided a response. Prior to PED testing, they were within the rules, are you OK with what they did? Or do you arbitrarily draw the line on what is acceptable within the "whatever it takes" mentality at another point along the path?

If we're really gonna compare PED use and bunt singles, the debate can't go any further.

Don't cop out. It's a legitmate question.

Weren't steroids a banned substance in this country? In that case, the line isn't so arbitrary.

EDIT: @ ORS

EDIT 2: If they weren't, then I think it's a completely legitimate and relevant comparison.

They have been a controlled substance for quite some time. The memo is a blanket statement about the use of controlled substances. You could say the league disallowed their use, but most people would disagree and point to the 2003/2004 timeframe as when the league really addressed the issue.

Right, I agree with that. My only point was that, if steroids were a controlled substance in the USA, even if they weren't officially banned by MLB, the line BS21 is drawing isn't so arbitrary.

JfC, are we really comparing steroids and bunt singles? Has it really come to the point where anyone against steroids but is for bunt singles is gonna be labeled a hypocrite?!

It seems like this thread has slowed down, but in retrospect, I'd like to make a couple quick points.

First, it's too bad that the views of some people seemed to be offensive to others. I thought this was an interesting topic, and I enjoyed discussing it with everyone, whether they shared my opinion or not. Personally, I think this is the approach everyone should take on a message board, but to each their own.

Second, I wanted to comment on the notion that a bunt single is some sort of illegitimate hit, or an easy way to get on base. If reaching via a bunt is as automatic as some are portraying it in this thread, then players would bunt much more frequently. In reality, reaching via a bunt is not an easy thing to do, and, in most case, it takes a very good bunt. The way I see it, it's a completely legitimate way to reach base.

In this case' date=' many people do, you just aren't one of them. Move on, you aren't changing anyone's mind.[/quote']

I'm on this same boat, there's plenty on both sides. My problem is with the ones like AuldBroade who bash the entire site and call some respected members pink his because our opinions differ. That's the second grader crap I have no tolerance for.

You are this outraged over being called "pink". That is childish Emmz... and it's "pink hatter". Pink doesn't mean anything besides a girlie color.

Respect is in the eyes of the beholder, my opinion hasn't changed.

YeAuldBroade.. now think about what the gender of the person with a name like that is.

and! It's not because of an "opinion" it's a morality issue - but this has already been discussed.

And on an unrelated issue - I have never posted on any board where the amount of posts or time on a board is used in so many discussions to attempt to prove right/wrong or silence a new member. I've posted on message boards longer than some of you have been alive, does that mean no one should ever be allowed to contradict me?

I can only speak for myself, but I really don't care whose post I'm responding to, I just focus on the content of the post.

Everyone seriously needs to chill the f*** out.

I think 'everyone' is an overstatement. For the most part, this has been an intelligent and civil discussion.

I don't mean just on the thread, but on the board as a whole. And if the hat don't fit......

I don't really find the current state of the board to be any different than what it usually is. And I'm not following the cliche.

Then you need to read the GT's patiently.

The bickering is not at its high point, but the whining has reached incredible levels of epicness, this thread is just icing on the cake.

You've just insulted the board itself and a good portion of those posting on it. Stop taking yourself so seriously, and try being more friendly to other opinions. I know there's no reasoning with old people on their opinions, but if you have a problem, its as easy as not typing in an address. As to the pink and his thing, I'm using a handheld device and its kinda rushed, the his thing I understand, but don't fuss over things you know full-well are just the product of an error.

Fair enough, I often don't read the GT's word for word unless the Sox are playing the Yankees. With that being said, I guess more emotional reactions are expected in the GTs.

That's a fair point, but still, Jesus Christ.

As for the discussion in here, i simply don't see the topic as one that should elicit such emotional responses.

As i stated before, there are three POVs about the subject, and in this particular instance, it's about a subjective opinion on how people view a particular subject, and while it warrants discussion, it should not warrant being taken to a personal level.

Now, if they were bashing Beltre or Drew.....

I didn't insult the board, I did insult certain members if they felt a certain way but I'm really disgusted and won't apologize or take it back. I don't consider it a difference of opinion (as I've stated over and over) because I don't consider it an opinion Emmz, I've already stated that in many posts and WHY I feel that way. I'm not old, I'm 46 the alias is a joke. And no I had no idea you meant "pink hatter" when you typed pink - why would I? So don't assume others can see that you're posting on a hand-held device and that they should know that's why you're not adding in words.

However.. the age comment was quite an insult on your part so I don't think you have any moral ground to stand on about members insulting other members.

I completely agree. Personally, I try to separate my emotions when I post on this board (and I try to do so in all intelligent conversation), and I think I do a good job of it. However, that isn't how some people approach these topics, while others can't help it. To each their own.

Really? Because I've been posting on message boards since the beginning of this decade and this is no different than anywhere I've been. It's never welcome on message boards for new members to come in and get attitudes with everyone and s*** like that. These places are basically communities, and you don't go into a community and talk s*** and expect no one to get defensive. To be honest it seems to me with the way you post that you've never really even been on a message board. Everyone has differing opinions, and that doesn't make them immoral or pink hats or any of that s***. This isn't a morality issue. It's opinion, no matter how many times you want to say it's not. Things change all the time, this game is constantly changing. If you don't like that, too bad. Get over it.

to add: People really do need to chill. It's baseball, it's a game, not everything is going to be the way it's wanted to be. Players will suck for a while, then they won't. Teams will lose then they won't. Streaks will happen. Disagreements on everything involved will happen. People will overreact to losing streaks, winning streaks, player injuries, everything. f*** all this fighting stuff, it does nothing. Especially on the internet.

You and I have bumped heads repeatedly. I don't take your opinion on me very seriously when I know you're only posting from frustration.

Or so you think. Normally I'm not frustrated. I have a passionate way of speaking and i usually post in a stream of consciousness sort of way. In the end it's all pixels on a screen to me.
