Time to look for replacements. We can't keep the patchwork outfield going all year -- if nothing else, we need our backups to be able to cover for the inevitable 3 week Drew back-related vacation towards the second half of the year. Also, I don't want Reddick up any more than he has to be.

Dejesus is the guy I want, but it's time to discuss alternatives as if we might have to use them. What else is out there that's worth going for?

I said it on the gt, but its pretty clear that Reddick is trying too hard right now. in three games, he made the same mistake twice-- he tried to make spectacular outfield catches, failing and giving up an extra base or two. He wasn't hitting in triple A, so why try to get him to hit up here?

Desperation, that's why.

They need to bring in a veteran OF.

Or... OK, let me be clearer. They need to ditch Hermida and bring in someone who can play 3 positions. Hall's the only reason Hermida's even adequate -- that won't do.

Bringing in a veteran OFer? This is something that I recommended when Cameron's guts fell out and Ellsbury broke his ribs. One injury will be chronic and recurring and the other takes a long time to heal. I said that McDonald should have been a short-term stop gap. Two months later, he is still on the team and we don't have a real major league CFer. I wasn't hating on McDonald. I was just stating the obvious. We need another OFer.

We also need two bullpen guys, and a better defensive backup middle infielder now that both Pedroia and Scutaro are playing through injuries. But, I don't think the front office is prepared to make the trade. Considering that Bard is the only player on the team that has come up from the minors since 2007, I think they're just going to sit on what they have, and not drop any more prospects. The season rests in the hands of the starting pitching at this point.

Statement from the Red Sox on Ellsbury: second rib fracture was discovered

E-mail|Link|Comments (4) Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 10, 2010 05:33 PM

This from the Red Sox:

Red Sox Medical Director Dr. Tom Gill and Dr. Lewis Yocum issued the following statement today in regards to outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury:

“An MRI of Jacoby’s thoracic spine and posterior rib area, recommended by us jointly, revealed a non-displaced rib fracture and edema in the left posterior-axillary line. This fracture, which is in a different area than the initial fractures and which was not present on previous scans, is likely the result of a new injury which occurred when Jacoby dove and impacted the ground during his brief return to play. Jacoby will require several weeks of rest and physical therapy.”

The play they are referring to was on May 23 in Philadelphia when Ellsbury made a diving catch of a ball hit by Raul Ibanez. He said in the days that followed that he didn't think he was hurt on that play. But apparently he was.

At any rate, this is a second injury.

Edema: Swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues.

The left posterior-axillary line: Is basically your side, going toward the back. See this

It is your side. The axillary line is your arm pit, so it is a line drawn right down your arm pit. So he broke another rib diving? Hmmm. That's interesting. This guy is frickin fragile. He's got more edema too? The edema should have subsided by now, meaning he isnt resting as he should. He's gonna be out for awhile

wait wait.... so your trying to tell me that because we have a bunch of problems, we shouldn't try to solve the depth issue in OF?

Because there's a whole bunch of other problems we need to solve, don't solve this one? Really?

No' date=' I'm just saying that I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a big trade that will cost a top five prospect.[/quote']

I think you could get someone who could fill in without spending an organizational top 5.

Sure, if you think you can count on McDonald to sustain it. Nick Green had a nice little OPS about this time last year.

I think McDonald is fine against LHP (.319,.385,.574,.959) but he's a platoon guy and isn't great on defense. I'm fine with him and Hermida Platooning in LF, but we still have the problem with Cameron is CF. If he can stay healthy then we should be fine, if not, we need to look for another OF.

I have as much confidence in him as I do any major league average fill-in. Which isn't saying much. But his lefty splits make him a solid platoon option.

Well the bright side is now people have someone else to call a pussy and will probably STFU about Drew.

Today's players are generally pussies and prima donas.

Not "Everyday Drew" he's the textbook definition of grit.

You could always go get Jermaine Dye

It wasn't a good suggestion when you made it for the Yankees, and it isn't one now.

Peter Gammons commented that the Sox tried to ask the Rangers about old buddy David Murphy... but were turned away. They have also been scouting Cubs' outfielder Sam Fuld who has an OBP this year above .400 in Triple A. He's a New Hampshire boy and grew up a die hard Sox fan

I don't think the Sox will trade for another outfielder. How many do they need?

The scrubs are doing just fine, so far. Why take on millions in payroll and sacrifice prospects for what will

most likely 4-5 weeks until Ellsbury and Hermida come back?

While it would be preferable to have Reddick getting every day at bats in Pawtucket, he can fill in as necessary without a severe drop -off offensively and he is, despite what some members have said in the last few day, quite adept defensively. We saw Hall move to second tonight. Fine. Reddick comes in and does no damage.

One potential problem is if Scutaro goes down for a long time before Ellsbury and Hermida come back.

Then we would see Reddick in the line-up every day. Still, the Sox appear to have enough swat with a .190 hitter playing every day. We've seen a lot of that in the last 7 years.

I say stand pat.

Because it might not just be a few weeks. Rib problems have a way of lingering. Also because you can't count on McDonald or Reddick to sustain their production.

Fuld wouldnt be taking on millions in payroll' date=' he's a minor league outfielder[/quote']

So the Sox should get another MiLB scrub OF?

Well, something is up. You just posted in the GT that Reddick has been optioned to Pawtucket. Where he belongs (for his own good).
