Wrapping it up from soggy Fenway

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 17, 2010 12:44 AM

Tonight's game was suspended by rain in the middle of the 9th inning with the score 1-1. It will be restarted from that point at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday. The teams will then play the second game of the series 30-45 minutes later.

It's a safety issue. You cannot grip the ball as well and it might fly into the face of the hitter. Especially if he cannot see it well.

I realize this and the fact that it will never happen due to the sheer amount of money involved, I'm just saying I'd love to see them try to play through it. I just hate how many rain delays and postponed games we get this time of year.

Is there a reason why they wouldn't start the PPD game at 6:10 rather than 7:10 to give them more time to work with?

My thought exactly. Yeszir is right, this probably will go 14 innings.. that is if they can even play. It has been raining on and off all day.

Am I the only one who feels they should just go ahead and play through rain? If it rains... it rains. Suck it up and play through it. If it's sloppy, it's sloppy. It's not like one team gets an unfair advantage. Sure, it might be an ugly game, but you can't honestly say seeing teams sliding around in the rain/mud screwing up routine plays wouldn't be entertaining.

I don't want to hear the "it's dangerous argument" because plenty of other sports play in rain and bad weather. It might just make the sport seem a little less "sissy" in some folks eyes (but really I just want to see guys sliding around in the outfield while a routine flyout turns into an inside-the-park HR).

This makes a mockery out of the game. Plain and simple.

Trust me, I just went out for a walk. I got drenched. It's not a downpour but it's a steady rain. The good news is - it's not that dark, it could stop and there's no wind so it feels a lot warmer than they predicted OH and it's still more than 5 hours until "Play Ball".

I live in Springfield (90 or so miles west of Boston) and it's not raining. Hasn't for a few hours. Infact the sun was just out for a while, but now it's getting cloudy again

Yep.

If it rains... it rains. Suck it up and play through it. If it's sloppy, it's sloppy.

Look at that, another big-shot fan who hasn't done a damn thing telling the people who actually play the sport to 'suck it up' and 'be tough'. Even though you more than likely wouldn't do so yourself.

It's not like one team gets an unfair advantage.

One team screwing up routine plays (as you acknowledge later in this post) DOESN'T give the other team an unfair advantage. Okay.

Sure, it might be an ugly game, but you can't honestly say seeing teams sliding around in the rain/mud screwing up routine plays wouldn't be entertaining.

You're clueless. Completely clueless.

Football, and...?

Nobody gives a f*** if it's 'sissy' or not (it isn't). Anyone who goes around calling different sports 'sissy' doesn't have an opinion worth considering anyway.

Nor is it raining in San Antonio, although it was earlier. I mean raining, raining. The pool has a 1-1/2" overflow drain line. It was raining so hard the level kept rising and the pool overflowed at the pool edge.

this has nothing to do with the game, but... LOL @ this tweet:

@Ken_Rosenthal: Guy in stands just asked if I was married. I said yes, happily. He said OK, but my daughter has a crush on you! Wait until I tell my wife!
