Actually, I am being a doctor and telling you what I know. You can choose to believe me or not. You cannot diagnose non-displaced rib fractures reliably on XRay. That is the imaging modality he had per the reports.

Fine, and you cannot diagnose an injury from behind your keyboard when the player is a thousand miles away

Each oblique projection is intended to depict the entire rib. The PA chest radiograph alone is ineffective in the identification of incomplete or minimally displaced rib fractures; the lower ribs may be obscured by the upper abdominal organs. If a lower rib fracture is suspected, a radiographic technique is required that centers an AP radiograph of the lower portion of the chest and upper abdomen on the upper lumbar spine film.

If the patient remains symptomatic despite a negative initial radiograph, a repeat radiograph of the ribs, acquired with a standard technique, often demonstrates the signs of early healing of a rib fracture. If the identification of occult rib fractures is clinically important, as in a case of suspected child abuse or for medicolegal reasons, radionuclear bone scanning with technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (99m Tc MDP) is often successful. A delay of several days should be allowed after an acute trauma to increase the sensitivity of radionuclear imaging for a rib fracture.

This is way more info than I expect you to understand, but here is the excerpt

BTW, how many Red Sox doctors PMed you for advice since the game ended? I'm sure it's the first time any of them have seen a rib injury in baseball.

Of course they had seen it before. But why panic the masses by calling it a fracture when they can call it a contusion and still be accurate. Most likely, he's got a crack in a rib or two. But right now, they saw no evidence of it. Persistent, severe pain is more likely to be a fracture than a contusion

Again, how the hell can you tell any of this when all you saw was the collision...if that?

I saw the collision. He was hit on the lateral aspect of the ribs, their weakest point, by a 200 lb man's knee going at close to full speed. I would be shocked if he didnt have a fracture. Plus, he's still in pain, over the ribs. It isnt rocket science.

I just got back from going to the store. And, I did not see the collision. However, I have to say, what Jacko says makes sense. First off all, regardless of how you feel about him, Jacko has spent at the very least, 6-8 years studying and practicing Medical Science. Something that apparently, no other Talksox member has done.

Secondly, I have experienced similar injuries at least twice. Most recently, I was in a major auto collision where the air bag was deployed. Initial x-rays were "negative". After two weeks, my employer wanted verification of my injuries as I was about to enter into "disability". New x-rays showed a fracture of the sternum and two "soft ribs". And, I had pneumonia from taking shallow breaths for two weeks. There are other complications from such injuries. But they are really gross.

Maybe Ells is lucky and will be back on the field sometime soon. But if he sustained damage anywhere like I did, be thankful Hermida was signed.

I must tell you...after years of fearing your lineup' date=' especially with the PED Boys probably the most fearsome duo baseball had seen in years...your lineup is really ordinary. Spots 5-9 are pretty much a vacation [today's lineup'].

I must tell you.....wish your ban hadn't have been lifted. Seriously.

Jacko Defense Team on the prowl. In the end, nobody knows what's wrong with Ellsbury until the official report comes back. It's like identifying pitches through the TV screen.

I'm not debating Jacko's medical credentials. My entire point is that he seems so damn sure about how a guy is feeling and what's wrong with him when he hasn't himself seen anything besides the collision and I'm sure it has something to do with the uniform Ells wears. If the same thing happened to Granderson, he'd say "oh, well the Yankee doctors examined him and said he's fine so he'll probably just miss 3-4 days. He's a gamer.....so tuff."

That's fine. Maybe the chart needs to be amended!:D

However, from what I've observed in 12 months on Talksox, Jacko has been pretty much dead to nuts on his medical assessments. He's explained quite accurately, Lowell's hip problems. Lowrey's wrist injury, several pitchers elbow and shoulder injuries, and, Westmorland's brain surgery/complications. He never examined any of them.

He has just given his assessment and opinion based on his observations and knowledge.

Much like Dr. Timothy Johnson does on ABC.

Hahahahaha!

I was being sarcastic because I can't spell (even with spell-check) and It has been brought to my attention twice in the past three days. No offense intended.

Every one of your posts have been excellent tonight. As usual.

Hahaha, no offense taken. I appreciate the compliment. Nothing like writing post after post debating the Yankees' financial means...

You've been pissing-up a knotted rope on two issues. A for effort.

You're second-in-command.

Wow...it seems like I really care! Wait..um...no. Maybe not.

In all seriousness, I don't knock his medical expertise. Just his baseball knowledge.

and I also help out whomever may need it on a PM basis. Though I am a Yankee fan, I did take an oath, and am here to help as needed.

Yea, the hypocritical oath

 Ohhhhhhhhhh burn.

Ellsbury stated that his pain was more over the pectoral and NOT over the rib itself. Hence, he should only be out a few days. If his pain is truly not over the rib, then I agree with his assessment.
