The Sox were doing their due dilligence at my Sunday Softball game. I think i could be the second lefty out of the 'pen, but i need more time to work on my slider.

Many complain about the perceived lack of offense but my biggest concern has been and continues to be the bullpen.. and this thread has not improved my outlook.

Doubront needs to stay in the minors and get his work in.

Shouse---->Doubront----->Embree.

In my opinion.

Red Sox sign Embree to minor-league deal

The Red Sox, unhappy with their bullpen options, today signed 40-year-old lefty Alan Embree to a minor-league deal that included an invitation to spring training.

With veteran Brian Shouse not particularly impressive and prospect Dustin Richardson getting hurt then quickly optioned out, the Red Sox were seeking a lefthander who could compliment Hideki Okajima in the bullpen.

Embree, 40, spent 2009 with the Colorado Rockies, going 2-2 with a 5.84 ERA in 36 relief appearances. His season was cut short when a batted ball fractured his right tibia on July 10.

The 16-year Major League veteran owns a 39-45 record with 25 saves and a 4.59 ERA in 882 career games/four starts with the Guardians (1992, 1995-96), Braves (1997-98), Diamondbacks (1998), Giants (1999-2001), White Sox (2001), Padres (2002, 2006), Red Sox (2002-05), Yankees (2005), Athletics (2007-08) and Rockies (2009). He ranks ninth all-time among Major League left-handers and second among active southpaws with 878 career relief outings.

He returns for a second stint in the Red Sox organization after going 8-9 with four saves and a 4.69 ERA in 211 relief appearances with the club from 2002-05. He allowed earned runs in just one of his 19 postseason games with Boston, going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP). Embree induced a ground ball by Ruben Sierra for the final out of Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS in Yankee Stadium.

Doubront before Embree.

Id rather have him get his feet wet in Triple A. The biggest jump in the minors is Double A to Triple A. There is no need to rush him. Besides he has never appeared in relief. He has always been a starter. Like Iglesias, he will be a September call up

I just dont see how Embree at this stage will be better than Shouse. Now Im not saying Shouse will be a key cog or anything but he still has more left in his arm. Embree's season was cut short in July because of a fractured leg... but that was a god send for Colorado. In the NL, he was compiling a 5.84 ERA through 36 games. His last full season (2008, Oakland), ERA was at 4.96

You guys are reading too much into the signing. All we're doing is giving him a look. I think he'd have to really pwn to get a job.

There is no reason to give this bum a look.

Relax. Embree is insurance. He is NOT the Opening Day starter. Give him some minor league innings, then either cut him or replace another struggling RP.

Or we could let Van Every in as a reliever. It'd be funny to watch and it'd give him some playing time. Plus, if our bullpen was that depleted or if we were behind by enough to put Embree in anyway, then we're already f***** so it wouldn't matter.

No he isn't. He is back in LA.

Gagne's available, he asked for and was granted his inconditional release.

Come on now, do we really not want that face on our team?
