I wouldn't put much stock in any study based on BMI. I think this trend is due more to players putting on bulk because of better exercise training, better fitness knowledge and better performance enhancing drugs than it does players being "fat". BMI makes no distinction between weight from muscle and weight from fat. If you're muscular it says you're overweight and if you're really muscular it says you're obese.

BMI (if I am correct) is only a measurement of height-to-weight ratio... so it does not take into account muscle.

Imperial's post was pretty much right on target. That article is retarded.

Then aren't' date=' by those standards, a lot of athletes overweight?[/quote']

Yeah, pretty much anyone with a muscular build is "overweight" according to BMI.

Yeah' date=' pretty much anyone with a muscular build is "overweight" according to BMI.[/quote']People no longer have to say they are "big-boned." They can just say that they are "overly muscular" . . . under all the fat.

You don't even need to be bulked up, BMI doesn't really work for pretty much anyone with a large frame.

BMI only measures weight compared to height. It's as related to fat as wins are related to pitching ability.

When I originally saw this thread I was going to make a joke post about how BMI is a useless stat like everyone says ERA and AVG are and all that. Ironically it turned out to be very true. Strange.

You're right. Anyone with a wide frame or a naturally thick or muscular frame is going to be "overweight" according to BMI. I go running and work out on a regular basis, until recently I was a martial arts instructor and I have a well below average percentage of body fat, yet I'm still "overweight" according to BMI because I'm wide set and solid. Body mass is a good thing, it allows players to generate more power. It has very little to do with fat.

What was that? Sorry' date=' I couldn't hear you over the sound of Prince Fielder eating the entire state of Iowa.[/quote']

And that was just the appetizer.
