Red Sox Claim Casey Fien

Red Sox claimed RHP Casey Fien off waivers.

He will report to Boston's camp. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 7.94 ERA in nine appearances with the Tigers last season, but has a 3.04 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 153 minor league relief appearances. He averaged 10.2 K/9 with Triple-A Toledo last season while exhibiting excellent command. Fien has been impressive on almost every minor league level as a bullpen arm and should eventually settle nicely into a middle relief role -- in Boston or elsewhere. He was designated for assignment by Detroit last week to make room for Johnny Damon on the team's 40-man roster. Mar. 1

He should be a decent back of the bullpen guy. Over his minor league career he's had a WHIP of 1.11 and a K/BB of 4.85. He's had good control and has struck out more than a batter an inning. He was the closer for the Tuledo Mudhens last year.

Looks like we DFA'd Gaby Hernandez as a result, according to Ian Browne. Also Fien's BB/9 and K/9 were 2.3 and 10.2 respectively in 58 innings in AAA.

Way I see it after looking at this guy is, we have hundreds of minor league innings showing excellent rate stats, and an 11 inning big league sample showing poor results. Honestly, if I had to pick which one I'd weight in favor of I'd pick the minor league sample.
