Money player: Why the critics of J.D. Drew may be off-base

Why won't he if he has no other offers? Do you think he will be sitting out?

You don't think any other team in baseball would have offered him $12 million a year? IMHO that's kind of silly. It was a player's market and Drew was only 30 years old, coming off back-to-back years of being one of the better OF in baseball.

Does not matter what I think. It is a fact that noone was going to offer Drew close to what Theo offered. There was also a little issue that Dodgers might have file tampering charges against the signing team.

Theo could have negotiated lot better than he did.

Do you have any proof at all to back up your personal opinion?

Are you so sure that it "does not matter what [you] think"? The rest of this statement is based solely on "what you think" transpired in the, to date unreported, negotiations Boras had with teams interested in JD Drew that offseason. That's a rather large leap of faith, one that you are apparently comfortable making when it's about "what you think", so I contend that, to you, what you think does matter.

Furthermore, using the basis of your logic in defining "overpaid", every FA ever signed, with the exception of those that play for a discount at a preferred location, is "overpaid", because, to some degree, they sign for some amount of money more than another team offered. I know what you are getting at is the magnitude of overpayment, but that's not what was asked. What was asked is if he is overpaid at all, and the application of your basis for determination would lead one to conclude that virtually all FA are overpaid, which is not very useful, not when the core of the original question goes back to the idea of payment vs. production. This is why WAR is meaningful when addressing this question.

The Cubs were rumored to have matched the deal Boston offered Drew.

J.D Drew actual salary 2007-09: $42 million.

J.D Drew dollar value 2007-09: $46.2 million.

if looking at fangraphs and war value all day makes you think Drew is worth what he is being paid, well god bless you for being so blind and not knowing it

It's not just about WAR. He's arguably the best defensive RF in baseball and last year he had the 4th best OPS of any outfielder. He's really a great player who does so many things tremendously and the only rags on his game I can think of is that he strikes out too much and he only has an .800 OPS against lefties.

If he's such a great player' date=' how come he gets based by most of Sox fans?[/quote']

Because people are stupid enough to think they know good baseball if it walks up and spits in their eye.

The difference between a great hitter and a bad one is about one hit a week. Don't even tell me your discerning eye is THAT good.

Understanding the stats i read makes me blind? News to me.

I'd take you a lot more seriously if your opinions didn't consist of "I don't liek Drew, he's a pussy!!!111!!!".

The dolar value assigned by Fangraphs is relative to a value per "Win", and it's a value that team's Front Offices actually use (Theo says hello) when awarding FA contracts. Now who should Dipre believe? Two-time WS champion Theo Epstein or Mino "I don't understand what the stat means but i will bash it and call you blind because you took the time to analyze it" 007. Answer seems obvious to me.

He doesn't get based, he gets bashed. And he gets bashed because most of the Sox fanbase consists of pink-hat ignorants.

Drew discusses his shoulder surgery

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff February 24, 2010 08:50 AM

J.D. Drew talked to the media this morning. He went into some detail on his left (non-throwing) shoulder and the surgery he had in the offseason.

Drew had two cortisone shots during the season, one just before the playoffs when he took a few days off. The discomfort had gotten to the point where he was unable to hit as often as he wanted before games.

"I figured after I got that last cortisone shot and we got some time off in the offseason it would just heal itself up. But around Thanksgiving I called (trainer Mike Reinold) and just told him, 'Hey, this is not getting any better. It actually feels like it's getting worse."

Drew elected to have traditional surgery to remove the spurs instead of an arthroscopic procedure that would have explored the health of his rotator cuff as well. That allowed him to come back a little quicker and he was able to prepare for the season as planned.

"There may have been some times I was affected playing with it, but not really that much," Drew said. "The second half of the year I felt like I was swinging the bat as good as any point in my career.

"The bone spurs were just a nagging thing. Once the game started and the adrenalin started flowing, you really didn't think about it."

Yaz would get a rub down before the game, tape it for the game, and ice it after the game. I can't get used to these prima donas who have to feel perfect to play. No offense to your guy, Dipre. He's just a reflection of today's players.

I think it's a money issue on both sides of the ball. Teams want to protect their investment, and players want to maximize their earnings.

Drew has always been soft' date=' ever since Boras hyped him as one of the best ever before he had 1 major league AB. He is the anti-Pedroia.[/quote']

Lolwut?

"Soft". Lol.

He means pansy.

Anti-pedroia is right. For fans that used to embrace the term dirt dog I can't understand how people tolerate Drew.

Two funny things:

A) The "ultimate dirt dog" Trot Nixon missed so much time in the DL they already had a place for him in the 60-day before every season started.

B ) Because people should care less about "Dirt-dogedness" and more about production. If Pedroia was a dirt-dog but didn't put up the numbers people wouldn't jump on the bandwagon, which is hypocritical IMO. Just sayin'.

JD Drew is the baseball version of a litmus test. At this point' date=' you either get what he brings to this team, or you don't.[/quote']

Guy is soft' date=' don't let your man crush blind you from that.[/quote']

You, sir, are an idiot.

No other way to explain it.

I have a question for the proponents of the "Dirt-Dog" theory:

Was Cristropher Trotman Nixon soft?

During his time with the Sox, he played over 130 games twice, and from '04-'06, played over 120 games once.

'TUFF AND GRIT ARE WHAT MAKES THE MACHINE KEEP SPINNING!!!11!!!1
