If there is any legitimacy to the rumor, the Sox will soon start a subtle smear campaign against Youk, just like they did with Bay. "Injury risk" would probably be the tactic.

I would actually take Youk over Gonzo when factoring in Youk's positional versatility

Not to mention contractual status.

Fight-starter?

Yeah, that's definitely another possibility. The media would then portray him as someone with a bad attitude.

In before Doiji:

A Three-Team trade in which you give up Youk plus other talent to get A-Gon is a marginal upgrade unless they get significant talent in return besides Gonzales, and it doesn't seem plausible.

Yup.

Let me start by saying I have no issue with Youk at all and am not advocating a trade.

But I have always had a concern about how well he will age. Not a major concern, but noteworthy. I mean the man stands in the absolute limits of the batters box to give himself extra time. What happens when he looses a little reaction time? I mean he can't go any further back in the box to make up for lost bat speed. I'm not saying he will become completely inadequate at the plate. But if he regress's even some he will be an average 1B as far as offense goes. And many might feel different about trading him.

I don't believe any player to be "untouchable". But with Youks current production and contract, I don't see a trade happening at the moment. As far as down the road? I could see to some scenario's leading to him being traded I suppose.

I agree, Epstein's smart enough to make anyone available at the right price.

Epstein has stated that anyone is subject to trade. That would include Youk.

I'm with J_E. Youk is just too good at first and third. And arguably the Sox's best offensive player. Unless Albert is coming in return, I don't see it happening.

I agree. Youk is one of the last few that I'd ever consider trading. My point was that every man has his price, and that nobody is untouchable for the right price.

Come on, Jed Lowrie is pretty untouchable. Mainly because he can't seem to enter a baseball park without feeling sick. Untouchable.

So who does everyone think is the Opening day starter?

I think it will be Beckett.

rotoworld said that Beckett is preparing for his opening day start in Boston. But theres no link that says its confirmed

Posted

I don't see them snubbing Beckett as the "Opening day" Starter. Especially while they are trying to extend him.

I agree the title is a touch overrated.

Posted
To be honest, I think that "Ace" more describes the talent of the starter rather than the position in which they are starting. That way, I think that it is possible for team's to have multiple aces, regardless of the fact that there can only be one #1 starter.
Posted

I think its a good debate when we cant decide who will be the true ace of the staff

EDIT: Its looking like even tho Embree has just pitched one game, which was an inning vs Baltimore Triple A team... that he has a good shot of making it on the opening day roster

Just the articles Im reading and watching Nesn. One of those "sentimental" crap additions to the roster. Then after a month theyll sumbit to their mistake and DFA him. Shouse, Nelson and Atchison are having decent full ST's

Atchison has looked filthy from both his stats and everything i've read.

That's crazy, I could've sworn I woke up this morning and saw that the Sox had signed Julian Tavarez on SportsCenter. I just realized I was dreaming though.
Posted
This isn't related to the Sox, but it is related to Spring Training. I was looking at the box scores yesterday and noticed Kyle Farnsworth started a game for the Royals. He went 5 innings. Is this what it has come to for the Royals? Kyle Farnsworth as a SP?

That would have been hilarious, unless the Red Sox actually intended on using him in games. Then it's not so funny.

I wish MLB had 10 day contracts like the NBA. Maybe they do and I don't know about it?

In any case, I think it would be really cool to sign both Farnsworth and Tavares to such contracts that would coincide with a Yankees series.

Imagine Tavares plunking A-Rod and the resulting bench clearing brawl! Farnsworth could run on to the field and pummel purple lips.

Oh the joy I would feel.

I think it will be Beckett as well. I really don't care who it is to be honest. Beckett or Lester would both be fine with me.

I just read somewhere today that Beckett was definitely going to start the opener.

I dunno if it was just someone passing opinion as fact or what though...

Read this today from Peter Abraham...

Terry Francona was talking this morning about the team's travel plans for the game in Washington on April 3.

All the players will travel. "Even Beckett," he said.

Meaning, of course, that Beckett will start the next day in the opener against the Yankees.

Francona wouldn't say more as he wants to lay out the entire rotation first.
