Piazza was a great game caller and blocker' date=' he had a horrific arm. Piazza was also 3X the hitter Posada is/was.[/quote']

Well that just gives more validity to his compliments of Cervelli. I knew he was a good game caller, but I never though of him as much of a blocker, and he definitely couldn't throw to save his life. But either way, still one of the best catchers in history, even if his offense can be attributed to his pimply back.

Bad news for Yankee fans. Jeter is going to take the plunge and get married.

There's a report out today saying that it's not Derek who's getting married, but rather his sister Sharlee. Nobody has confirmed the truth though.

Yankees returned outfielder Jamie Hoffmann to the Dodgers.

Hoffmann was selected by the Nationals in the Rule 5 draft and then sent to the Yankees in the Brian Bruney trade, but is now Dodgers property again. There's some speculation that New York may try to work out a trade for Hoffmann that would allow them to keep him without being on the 25-man roster all season.

Chad Gaudin was waived today. Looks like Sergio Mitre beat him out for the long man routine. I hope they know what they're doing, cause I like Gaudin a lot more than Mitre at this point

I agree. I thought his repertoire fit well in the swing role too with a good fastball slider combo. Mitre is really a sinkerballer with minimal secondary pitches which makes him a better fit out of the rotation. But as a reliever, I would only put him in for mopup duty

Also very disappointed about this.

EDIT: I shouldn't say "very". Obviously the last man in the bullpen isn't the end of the world, but I believe (and the numbers support this belief) that Gaudin is the better pitcher. I would imagine this has something to do with Girardi's faith in Mitre stemming back to 2006.

Once again, using spring training as an accurate gauge is not the most effective way of determining things if you ask me.

I stated earlier that Girardi's fondness towards Mitre from 2006 in Florida might have influenced this decision. On second thought, that probably isn't the biggest factor.

Gaudin signed a 2.95 million dollar non-guaranteed contract, and Mitre signed a 0.85 million dollar non-guaranteed contract. According to what I just read (yankees.lhblogs.com), the Yankees will only have to pay 1/4 of that salary now that he is released. Due to the fact that they probably don't view Gaudin as being so much better than Mitre, and based on some money saving decisions they've made this offseason (and all the talk of a budget), I think it's pretty clear why they made this choice.

If the decision was made because they really like Mitre better going forward than I have to disagree with it. However, we (Yankees' fans) really have no complaint if it was made because of money constraints.

Weak justification, if you ask me. Save a nickel, give up more runs. Gaudin wasn't really going to hurt your team. If used enough, Mitre can singlehandedly blow a handful of games. Just because he comes dirt cheap doesn't mean it's a bargain for you. The Yankees don't have money constraints.

Your entire argument is based on the premise that they don't. However, judging by what they've said this offseason it appears that they do, and it really is the only way this move makes sense. Think about it, we all think Gaudin is better than Mitre. It's pretty obvious, and I find it hard to believe that the Yankees don't feel the same way.

I'm not saying they couldn't afford Gaudin, but it likely played a big factor.

It's easy to say the team with the 200 million dollar payroll can do whatever they want (financially), but they've been very money conscious his offseason, and it's pretty clear that they've reached their limit. Remember, even the team with the highest payroll has a ceiling.

It still doesn't make any sense? :dunno: Mitre is awful. I hope he logs at least 50 innings for you again.

Considering Mitre is further removed from surgery (and the Yankees probably like his stuff to some extent), coupled with the money difference, it makes sense to me.

Now, I agree, as a Yankee fan, I hope he innings are reserved for mop-up duty.

y228, I think they are liking what they are seeing out of Mitre. I think the extra recovery time is helping him. Regardless, the spot will be rendered moot by midseason when McAllister becomes the best option outside of the top 5 to start.

Rotoworld is reporting that Brett Gardner will get the bulk of the PT to start the season in LF, with Randy Winn and Marcus Thames playing vs lefties. There is a good chance that the OF will be...

VS RIGHTIES

LF- Gardner

CF- Granderson

RF- Swisher

VS LEFTIES

LF- Thames

CF- Winn

RF- Swisher

The truth is, in the big picture, neither Mitre or Gaudin figures to matter much. Move on...

I can see them sitting Gardner against lefties, but, at least initially, I think they'll give Granderson every opportunity to improve against LHP.

I agree, they arent going to turn Grandy into a platoon guy right away, but they have the personell to make it happen if his performance necessitates it. I also see the Yankees having a TON of speed this yr. Girardi liked SBs, and having Jeter, Granderson, and Gardner in the lineup, he's got a lot of it. And hell, ARod should still be a double digit steal guy and they have Winn on the bench.
