Wasn't 2004 also his contract year? Maybe he is one of those players a carrot needs to be dangled in front of.

I think it's much easier for a player to juice up for a contract year and then get lazy again than it is for a player to juice up and then maintain that muscle for multiple years.

Players are always working out, Beltre is no exception. His muscle wouldn't just decrease from 45+ HR muscle to 20 HR muscle because he "got lazy".

Calling professional athletes lazy is ridiculous.

I think it was just a fluke.

A lot of hitters/pitchers have monster contract seasons, then never repeat them again.

He might have been on steroids, but none of us really knows.

This and this.

Must of been one hell of a carrot.

A .270 hitter spikes (no pun intended) to .334, HR from ~24 to 48, and SLG% from ~.430 to 629.

Batting average is the first sign of a fluke season.

I really don't care either way.

If he did steroids he did them, if he didn't, he didn't, if it was a contract year, that's what it was, and if it was a fluke season, that's what it was as well.

He is what he is, a guy with great defense and good power who doesn't get on base much. Even in his monster year he didn't get on base much when taking his Ba into account.

Fluke seasons have happened all across time, without explanation. Using steroids for a season to hit a bunch of jacks, and then stopping is ridiculous, because players can easily maintain that simply by continuing to use roids with their regular workouts. Even David Ortiz was able to use steroids, and maintain the results for several seasons. Seriously, think about it.

This.

How we started going on his monster year I don't really know. It was a huge season, but regardless, he's still a better-than-average offensive player, with Gold Glove defense.

If healthy I expect something like a .270/.330/.480 line, 25+ HR, 40 something walks, 100 something K's and good defense. I think that's a reasonable expectation given all the intangibles. He put's that up for a contending Boston and he will get a "Lowell" type deal from some team next off season.

Perhaps it was genetically modified.

The problem is that it doesn't matter either way.

None of us will ever know what exactly happened to fuel Beltre's 2004 season. It's like asking a chicken if an egg came before it.

Posted
Yeah, even though defensive metrics, the Sox medical staff, and hell, watching the ballgames point otherwise.

You know, wishing for the impossible hard enough won't make it come true.

Well we'll see if he can hit at Fenway. His career numbers at Fenway leave A LOT to be desired.

That's a reasonable expectation. He'll probably hit around Lowell levels with a bit more power, but the difference in D is enormous.

Beltre has 67 plate appearances at Fenway. Please stop.

Do I need to reference Spudboy's English thread? It's You're for god sakes.

On that note, I think that Legend, CanadianSox and I should make a thread on proper English spelling rather than its cheap American substitute. We will have an SAP option for Dipre.

I'm probably one of the people with the least need for SAP. I can speak, spell and formulate sentences and paragraphs correctly. It always pisses me off when people who don't have ESL make less sense than i do, honestly.

Depends on how well Lowell's off season flexibility rehab is going.

Remember, Lowell had better UZR than Beltre in 07 and 08 combined. You forget that he was GG level fielder before his hip went out.
