27/28 1st place votes

one guy voted Cabrera in for 1st (idiot)

Thank God it wasn't Captain Intangibles, voters got it right this time. I've been fairly pleased with the ROY, CY and MVP choices so far this year.

As have I. The voters definitely made the right choice with Mauer.

I would have given it to Mauer also, but what is interesting to take note of is that, while Pujols led his league in WAR, Mauer didn't do the same.

Ben Zobrist: 8.6 WAR

Joe Mauer: 8.2 WAR

While WAR isn't the end all be all (like I said, I give it to Mauer), it counts for a lot. Obviously, because of who he is, Ben Zobrist isn't going to garner many votes. Jeter finishing third was also accurate, but Teixeira got way too many votes.

Mauer missed a month and led the league in OPS. War can be a pretty subjective stat.

Yeah, I agree that Mauer should have won, but it was surprising that he didn't lead the AL in WAR. Obviously OPS relies on averages, so the fact that he missed a month, when it comes to OPS, is irrelevant (not sure if you were trying to equate the two).

My main point was that Zobrist should have received a lot more votes.

WAR is directly related to games iirc. The more games you play, the higher your WAR.

Right, and when we're talking about the MVP voting, the fact that Mauer spent that time where he couldn't contribute to his team has to count against him, in my opinion. I'm not saying it's his fault that he was injured, but when you're being measured against your peers (in the MVP voting for example), the more games you play, the more you're able to help your team.

Rules are made to have exceptions. Completely dominating the league and carrying a team into the playoffs is an exception.

Being "gay" for Joe Mauer, I couldn't have said it any better myself.

No one else deserved this award, Joe Mauer was arguably the best player in baseball this year. Joe Mauer added power, without sacrificing his incredible ability to make contact with the ball, and of course, he's absolutely stellar on defense.

Joe Mauer is absolutely the player that the Twins envisioned, and more.

Like I said, he should have won it. I merely pointing out Zobrist's candidacy.

But his candidacy was based on WAR. I consider both Jeter and Teixeira to be better choices than Zobrist and it's not close.

That's fair. I probably misspoke on Teixeira, but I think a lot of it depends on what you think of Teixeira as a defender. Obviously, the general perception is that he is excellent, but his UZR/150 was -4.1. Personally I found his defense to be fantastic, but it certainly is interesting what his statistics say.

That is why i only use defensive metrics in conjunction with what my eyes actually see. They're obviously flat out wrong in some instances.

What i meant by "His candidacy by WAR" is that WAR values the position the player plays a lot, so being a 2B gives Zobrist an enormous advantage over Tex and Cabrera.

Right, I agree with you about the defensive metrics. As for WAR, you don't think that should factor in?

It should, but not as much as it does. Teixeira put up a monster season even by positional standards.

You honestly think he's leaving Minnesota? He loves it here. He's recently stated he would sign here for a lesser deal than the Sox or Yanks would offer. I'm pretty sure he's staying put.

Yeah I agree. He's a hometown guy, face of the franchise, and loves playing for the Twins. I honestly hope he doesn't go anywhere.

Yes! I'm glad there are people who feel this way, and not trying to take a shot here, but especially a Yankee fan. Most of my friends who are Yanks fans (I have a couple) are practically beating each other off to the thought of landing a guy like Joe Mauer. I can understand it, but why would you want to ruin the balance of power that much?

Posted
I wouldn't. I just wouldn't want the Red Sox to get him either. But I think with the way everything revolves around money in sports we need more guys like Mauer who (may) want to stay home. Besides, I'm very excited about the three catchers we have in Cervelli, Montero, and Romine...one of 'em has to pan out.
