Every now and again, Javier says something that really makes sense and makes a poetic brilliance out of his normal idiot savant writing style.

This was not one of those times.

I know, that's why we shouldn't count you in, right?

Let the big boys who've played in the fast-pitch league (me) do the talking.

amirite?

This proves that your life can suck ass, but you can still be proud about things that mean as much as a distance pissing contest.

A) Who the f*** are you?

B ) It was a joke.

C) However, your statement is true.

The douche who keeps calling me out for having "no life" apparently can't live without TalkSox.

Such irony is always delicious.

Someone likes you.

I think it is funny someone would spend all the effort to start some crap.

Dipre is right. Batting average isn't a great statistic to look at. OBP tells you all that you thought you were finding out by looking at batting average, plus some other stuff.

The offensive goal for teams like the red sox is not to get HITS. The goal is to not make outs. The team has 27 outs to 'spend' throughout the game. OBP is ones ability to not make outs. Batting Average is merely a representation of some percentage of struck balls that do not make outs. OBP represents plate control and discipline. AVG includes good hits and s***** hits, half-errors, etc.,

It isn't just a matter of opinion by people on these boards that AVG is a less than useful stat. It is pretty much conventional wisdom around baseball that AVG is overrated.

I know this very well actually. I just like the idea of small ball better. The point isn't to get hits, get on base, nor to make outs. The sole point is to get RUNS. You can do this several if executed correctly. Sure, OBP helps, but it's not my favorite means. Yet I still look at it from time to time. But Gonzo has been a good hitter even if his OBP disagrees.

That's an oximoron.

*sigh*

Ok then.

It's .234 for the season. Where is your logic? He's not an offensive threat, an OBP that low is hideous

The SLG%.

It's unsightly. (ESL alert)

Not to mention Hardy is pretty damn good in the field himself, plus he's capable of hitting 25 bombs. Of course this was an off year, but I'm still more than willing to take that chance

BSN07 just got a boner the size of the Empire State.

Hardy had a .259 BABIP this year.

I think those expecting a rebound season are justified.

Of course on the other side of that, Hardy also only hit a line drive in about 13% of contact plays or so. Which is extremely low and suggests that he isn't having bad luck so much as struggling to square up the ball.

I'm pretty much certain he has a glitch in his mechanics.

I can't say for sure, but i'll be certain after further research.

What's the chances this is like Lowell in 2005' date=' where there was something simple wrong that was quite possible to fix?[/quote']

Considering his history of past success, and the fact that the drop-off is unexplainable, i'd say pretty good chance.

avg. is only a piece of OBP, how can you disregard OBP for a stat as useless as Avg? I would buy it a bit more if you liked OPS but OBP is by far the best statistic in baseball, it is the precursor to runs and it shows how good a player is at not making an out, if you have high avg. but its the same as your OBP, then that makes you pretty mediocre, OBP is what helped make manny so great, he almost never struck out, it was like you either walked him or he hit the ball, his OBP was massive, I just dont see how anyone can disregard OBP.

Yes, and OBP says Gonzo gets out 70% of the time, and it's even worse when you look at his career, and even more importantly this season overall

Having said all this, I think that everyone has been pleasantly suprised with Gonzo's offensive performance, we were all expecting zip from his bat and he as actually brought something to the dish, how many HRs has he had since he came to Boston? he has been very good compared to his career performance but A.Its a fluke caused by a monster hot streak, see Green, Nick 2009 B.he is still not doing that great, its only when you compare him to his own career numbers that he seems good.

Never the less, he has not been the black hole instant out that we were expecting. He's not a negative in the line-up. He's had some timely and even winning hits.

And, of course his D does not suck.

He may not be a candidate for Sox SS long term, but the Sox could have done (and have) worse.
