It's 11 because if the Sox win 11 more games, neither the Angels nor the Rangers can match their record based on the fact the Angels and Rangers play each other 7 more times.

UC Berkeley engineers have the magic number at 10.

Do you think those numbers are more accurate? You would think UC Berkeley engineers know what they're talking about.

You think ESPN is about sports nowadays? I don't know, the ESPN I watch seems to be about shameless self-promotion more than anything.

They deal with Mass Marketing sports for the casual sports fan, they have a few intellegent collumnists but they dont do very good in depth looks at anything.

Its the reason you will almost never hear ESPN mention OBP or OPS, you occaisionally hear it on BBT but not often

MLB.com has it at 11' date=' and they're MLB. So I go with them.[/quote']

actually we are talking about the sox magic number over the rangers which is 12 according to mlb.

Red Sox record: 86-58 (18 games left)

LAA record: 86-59 (17 games left)

Tex record: 80-65 (17 games left)

If the Sox win 11 more games, they have 97 wins. If Texas wins out, they have 97 wins, but in the process beat the Angels 7 times, meaning the best possible record from here on out is 10-7, meaning they can only win 96 games. Sox win the WC.

If the Angels win out, the same is true, but the Sox win the WC against Texas and not LAA.
