After tonight the Yankees are going to be 93-53, with the 16 games remaining. Seven of those games will be at home, while nine of them will be on the road. While it looked a couple weeks ago like the Yankees might fly past the 100 win mark, things have seemed to catch up to them a little bit.

At this point, 100 wins is probably what to expect, because those last 16 games are not too easy. In actuality, they only have one easy series remaining, the second to last one of the year against KC.

Tomorrow is crapshoot, with Gaudin going against Tallet. After that, a six game west coast trip could be very difficult at this time of the year. I believe Felix Hernandez is going to pitch one of the three games this weekend, which will increase the difficulty of that series. Obviously the three games in LA are going to be tough.

Then they come home for three games against the Red Sox, which are always tougher, but even tougher considering how the Sox pitchers have done lately. KC at home should not be too difficult, and then who knows what TB team will show up over the final weekend. Hopefully, for the Yankees sake, those last two series prove to be relatively meaningless.

They haven't been playing great recently, and considering the things I've already discussed, 5-5 in the next ten games (1 vs. TOR, 3 @ SEA, 3 @ LAA, and 3 vs. BOS) seems like a reasonable expectation. That would put them at 98-58 with six games remaining.

Wondering what others think...

I dont care what the end total of W/L is gonna be. I think its more important to pick when they clinch home field and the division. The yankees have 6 games prior to the sox series. The Sox have 7 games, 6 on the road, prior to the yankees series. I expect that the magic number will be down to 5 by the time the yankees and sox match up in the Bronx. As it stands, the yankees will be throwing CC, Joba and Pettitte vs the sox and the sox will be throwing DiceK, Byrd and Beckett. I think we nab 2 of those games and clinch at home vs KC. That would leave us with 5 games and 6 days to rearrange the rotation and get key guys some rest.

They had to come back down to earth from the tear they went on. I'm hoping they peaked early and continue to slide right through the playoffs.

I won't go as far as to say the Yanks peaked too early. But they have seemingly cooled off a bit from there earlier tear.

Well, the pitching was the difference. Right after the ASB, Burnett, Joba, CC and Pettitte were on tears. When 4 of your pitchers are going deep into games and pitching effectively, you will win a good amount. But fatigue, Joba rules, inconsistent play and some rest have slowed them down. The offense has slowed considerably since Girardi started sitting players.

The Red Sox have eight games prior to the Yankees series, and it's worth mentioning, with the exception of tonight, that Baltimore and Kanasas City are not very good.

Neither are the sox on the road

Right, but, right now, they're really playing well. You have to give them the advantage in those series. A 5-2 trip is very likely. As for the Yankees, 3-3 is probably what to expect. By the time the Yankees-Red Sox series roles around next weekend I expect the lead to be 4.5 (5 in the win column and 4 in the loss column). That would put the Red Sox in a position where they need to sweep.

Oh, you mean where the Orioles have beat the Sox what, once this season?

I don't give a s***. The Yankees have all but clinched a playoff spot and the best record. The games are basically meaningless.

I hope you're right. At this point I'm done arguing about the fact that things are locked up.

I don't give a damn how many wins they finish with in the regular season, as long as they get 11 in the postseason. Those are my expectations, year in and year out. Lets make it happen this year.

My point of this thread wasn't really about how many wins they were going to finish with. I guess I titled it incorrectly. It was really supposed to be about the ALE race down the stretch, and if the Red Sox could make it close.

You wonder if the team did peak too early? Me too.

Then I think back to the 90 Reds the 05 Chisox and the 06 Tigers, teams that essentially won their divisions by Memorial Day but then played mediocre ball down the stretch and looked soft.

Then you had the A's teams of the early 00s that started slow but then caught fire down the stretch, some of those A's teams played .675 ball after the break yet all of them failed to win the pennant. The Yanks starters have been iffy as of late with the exception of Mr May, Sabbathia.

The Yanks are the best team in the league and have earned home field advantage but I dont recall a lot of teams winning 7 game sets without a couple of hot pitchers and a good bullpen.

Phil Hughes has saved their pen and I think should be starting while Chamberlain gets sent to the bullpen to set up Rivera, i think thats their best strategy but they wont tinker with what got them here and consequently their best young arm will be used in relief which is fine with me.

f***in Detroit eats it, without Verlander pitching they can be beat every day, KC just swept them and did it easily yesterday with Grienke sticking it up Jacksons ass.

Anaheim and Boston are both hot, the Yanks have cooled a little and Detroit is floundering.

I dont think the Tigers will give NY any trouble but anaheim has a 4 headed starting rotation that is better than ours and NYs...We will have our hands full getting by them as will NY.

This is going to be an interesting October to say the least.

I wouldn't say Lackey-Weaver-Saunders-Santana is better than Beckett-Lester-Buchholz-DiceK

I don't get the whole "Sox aren't good on the road" argument. Pretty sure they have the 3rd best road record in the AL.

4th best. They are 3 games under .500 on the road, and for a championship caliber team, that kinda sucks.

Hell, there's a chance that the Twins beat out Detroit for the Central, and their best starter is Pavano and their best power threat is out for the yr in Morneau

Lackey-Kazmir-Weaver-Saunders is better than anything that includes DiceK or the unproven Buchholz

It's also better than Sabathia-Fail-Pettite-?

Just sayin'

You mean the fail that almost pitched the no-hitter against you in the Bronx? I'd take my chances with Burnett against pretty much anyone. As long as Molina catches him.

Being totally honest with yourself, do you SERIOUSLY feel good about Burnett right now?
