The Angels are on the verge of bolstering their beleaguered rotation for the stretch run by trading for left-hander Scott Kazmir from the Rays for a pair of prospects, a club source told MLB.com.

The Rays will get pitcher Alexander Torres and third baseman Matthew Sweeney in return in the deal, which is expected to be announced later today.

Good for the Sox's playoff hopes.

Am I correct in figuring that only the Yankees were the only team in the AL who couldn't put a claim on him? Strange... Kaz has been pitching much better lately.

Last 3 Starts: 2-0, 19.2 IP, 14 H, 7 ER, 21 SO, .189 BAA

Lackey

Santana

Kazmir

Weaver

Saunders

Not bad.

I guess the Rays don't think they can win this year. Either that or they are trying to appease the gods for their original trade for Kaz, also a steal.

I believe the Rays are trying to free up some payroll so they can take Crawford's option. I'm cautiously optimistic about this trade, but I really don't know anything about the two guys coming East to the Rays.

That rotation would also be really scary if they played to last year's numbers. This year they haven't been that impressive, but the talent and potential are there. If all goes according to plan, that is one hell of a rotation.

1. I think Kazmir doesn't have the arm he used to.

2. The Rays have a good history with their deals. I bet they got at least fair value (present or future).

Looks like the deal fell apart. Damn it, I was going to drive Kazmir to the airport myself.

Edit: Now I'm hearing that the deal is back on. Damn it Twitter, make up your damn mind.

Wow, please tell me Twitter is not your only resource for this information lol.

No, of course not. I use mlbtraderumors, espn, baseballamerica, pgcrosschecker and soxprospects when it pertains to prospect info. I just really hate Twitter.

Would this signal that the Rays are throwing in the towel for 2009? It would probably be viewed that way in the Tampa clubhouse.

I would think so, but it doesn't make any sense. They're 3 1/2 games back in the WC. That's not an insurmountable lead by any stretch of the imagination.

The link says the deal has fallen through now.

Really? I heard it fell through once and then was confirmed again. Are you reaffirming the first time it fell through or did the trade fall through yet again?

Sound it out. I know English isn't your first language but you can do it. :D

It's like a letter soup you got going on there.

I'm not really sure. I just clicked the link not long ago and it said it had fallen through.

According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Angels' deal for Scott Kazmir will be finalized within the hour.

The Rays have yet to confirm or even discuss any of these reports, but Topkin is as close to the team as anyone. Kazmir is reportedly headed to the Angels for prospects Alexander Torres, Matthew Sweeney and a PTBNL.

PTBNL better be someone of Wood's quality' date=' because this trade makes absolutely no sense.[/quote']

The Rays probably know something we don't.

That arm may be wrecked.

Pretty sure that the Angels wouldn't be making a move for damaged goods, but even if he is hurt, a 50% chance that Kazmir returns to form is better than the garbage they're getting in return.

I'll bet the Rays are losing some money.

This has to hit the Tampa Clubhouse very hard. Isn't kazmir the all time win leader for the franchise. He was always one of the cornerstones for this young team. To trade him for essentially nothing can't send a good message to the team. I would expect it to have a demoralizing effect.

I agree, somewhat. Makes me wonder if TB has decided that they don't have a real shot to leapfrog two teams.

im at least a bit curious as to why the Sox didn't put in a claim on him

Same here. Is Kazmir really a worse option than Paul Byrd?
