Why would Bard be sent down? He has been one of the most important set up men we have had this year and brought a huge lift. Thats the last guy I expect. I think it will be Penny who gets released because we can't trade him and wont go to the minors.

Because Bard is the only guy in the bullpen with minor league options left. It doesn't make a ton of sense to release Penny so close to Sept. 1st since he's a guy who could eat some innings in a blowout and save the actual useful members of the pen.

Matches up nicely against both, probably equally as effective.

vs. RHH - .186 AVG, .262 OBP, .305 SLG, .566 OPS

vs. LHH - .202 AVG, .270 OBP, .277 SLG, .547 OPS

and one important thing to remember here, and it renders the two shlubs going the other way almost useless, is the two picks the Sox will get when Wagner signs elsewhere

The two picks are nice. I also agree that he should be effective against both sides of the plate. I just think that using him for specialist work is a way to keep the workload under control. This is not a healthy pitcher. Also, there should be a lot of call for specialist work, and since the Yankees have 4 switch hitters in their starting lineup and 2 other lefthanders, there will be work for Wagner in key spots in that role.

The fact that he's also effective against RHH means that you can turn a switch hitter around with him. that's also useful, especially if you want to get Teixeira or Swisher pulling to left, rather than into the jet stream in Yankee stadium's right field.

Promising move, seems like, I'm willing to give it a shake, even if Bard was sent down temporarily. But I hope it'd be Penny...

Oh and as someone I know said...Dear Wagner...don't eat any of those welcome cookies Paps brings you. ;)

Even if he were I don't think you'd use him unless you had no choice.

One thing to bear in mind. Now we have both Saito and Wagner we have to treat with kidgloves because of possible injury issues with their arms. this means that Delcarmen and Ramirez in particular are probably going to be asked to do a lot more middle relief.

Sending Bard down because of options sounds nonsensical enough for them to actually do it. After all, they pulled Penny off waivers--but now I'm sure they regret it. That's another $5mil they have to swallow.

Epstein has behaved erratically this year. Lots of gambles have not worked out. Maybe too many gambles.

Now he has another in Wagner. He needs a New Year's resolution to stay away from damaged goods at discount prices.

LOL really???

Haha read it wrong. That's what I get for skimming it.:D

Still with Delgado being a FA and the Mets $ issues, Carter might get a real shot. Guy can hit and is still young enough to turn into something.

Rotoworld...

A source told the Boston Herald that outfielder Chris Carter is one of the two players to be named in the Billy Wagner trade.

According to the report, the other prospect is "not of significance." Carter, 26, is batting .279/.340/.439 with 14 homers and 59 RBI with Triple-A Pawtucket this season. He has a .261 batting average with four RBI in 23 at-bats over two brief appearances in the majors between this season and last. He wouldn't bring a very strong glove, but could at least provide a warm body in the Mets outfield and first base situation.

Between Jeff Bailey and Aaron Bates, the loss of Carter is irrelevant. If the report is right and the other prospect is "not of significance", we can safely say we got Wagner and two picks for nothing more than cash.

I agree. Upthread someone said Carter > than a compensation pick and supplemental round pick. In some respects that's true, because they have made some early round picks that have not panned out as well as Carter has. However, I think the book on Carter is written. LH who can hit RHP and can't field any position at even replacement level. I'd take the chance on hitting it big through the draft over keeping a player with known flaws and mediocrity at the big league level written all over him.

That was me, and it was an egregious typo. I intended to say Carter

It baffles me as to why the Mets agreed to this thing though. I guess they have zero confidence in their ability to draft cause I certainly don't think paying $2 million to Wagner for the rest of the year was a huge problem for them.

The Mets are broke.

I wonder if this might make turning a deal for Jose Reyes less impossible than it would be otherwise.

I would imagine if Reyes, Wright or Beltran became available for financial reason the Red Sox would look in on it.

Beltran- 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M, NTC

Wright- 10:$10M, 11:$14M, 12:$15M,

13:$16M club option ($1M buyout)

Reyes- 10:$9M,

11:$11M club option ($0.5M buyout)

They all make a decent amount. Who knows they could become available.

heck, I'd make the Mets an offer in earnest for Johan Santana. if they're broke, they'd probably appreciate getting out from under that contract as long as we give them enough talent to allow them to save some face (something like Bowden, Wagner, Yamaico Navarro).

I'd sure love to bring Santana to Boston if the price was right. He'd be more reliable than Erik Bedard and more likely to be available than Felix Hernandez, that's for dang sure.

You have a point, but I would rather see him healthy first.

Santana- # 10:$21M, 11:$22.5M, 12:$24M, 13:$25.5M, 14:$25M club option ($5.5M buyout)

# full no-trade clause

So he still has 4yrs/93M at least left on his deal.
