I wonder if Varitek's neck spasms were caused by going down on Heidi Watney all the time. Self-indulgent bastard!

BTW Thanks Heidi for getting Tek out of the lineup.

while thats amusing.. do you really think Tek has "neck spasms" or is this the excuse they give to bench him? He looked mighty pissed when they showed him on the bench

Buchholz I think is begginning too get it. He reminds such much of Lester his first couple seasons. Had poor control and got himself into way too much trouble. He is still doing that at time but at a lesser rate.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is Farrell's MO - turn young pitchers into groundball machines to build their confidence and then start to build up their strikeout counts.

He did it with Lester last year and coming in to this game Buchholz had something like a >60% GB percentage.

That's actually pretty interesting. I didn't even realize that but if the trend is there, I guess it's there.

His stuff doesn't hurt in the GB department either.

Nope, that two-seamer he's been toying around with has been great. Once he regains his feel for his curve I think the strikeouts will come back.

Not to mention his change vs lefties is not only a swing-and-miss pitch, they also pound it into the ground.

Nah

A two-seam fastball is a pitch in baseball and a variant of the straight fastball. It is similar to the sinker. The pitch has the speed of a fastball, but the general movement of a screwball.

A split-finger fastball or splitter is a pitch in baseball and a variant of the straight fastball. It is named after the technique of putting the index and middle finger on different sides of the ball, or "splitting" them. When thrown hard, it appears to be a fastball to the batter, but suddenly "drops off the table" towards home plate—that is, it suddenly moves down, towards the batter's knees.

It's a fastball but gripped directly through the seams, which makes it have a sinking action.
