There's no reason to be mad about this loss. It has an impact in the standings, yes, but Clay pitched well for the second outing in a row. Not only that, but Verlander was absolutely devastating today. I attribute the shut-out to him much more than I do to our offense. He was throwing 100 late in the 8th inning, 120 pitches deep into his count. He was completely on the ball. Not a whole lot you can do about it.

The only gripe I have is that Beckett won't be pitching any of the Texas games.

I watched the game today on MLB.TV and being relatively new to Baseball I don't know how to tell when a pitcher is doing really well as opposed to the batter doing really poorly.

Fingers crossed for the Wild Card.

well you look at a few things at first and you will learn the more subtle aspects later

A.Speed for instance, the opposing pitcher today,Verlander, was hitting 100MPH consistently on his fast ball thats amazing for a pitcher the average is around 94 on a Fastball, I think.

B.movement, some pitches have natural movement on them like curve balls that obviously curve in an effort to fool hitters the bigger the movement the better the pitch.

and there are many more ways to tell when a pitcher is pitching well but those are at least how to tell each individual pitch for starters. and if there are no runs and no one on base most of the game then the pitcher is probably doing pretty well. so chances are with alot of movement and great placement its the pitcher doing well. if he is giving up alot of base hits but getting lucky and getting out of a lot of jams then its probably ineptness on the side of the runners.

C. Control. Is the pitcher throwing the ball in the spots he needs to, usually this means "painting the corners" or tempting the batter with a pitch that is just outside. Anything but the dreaded "over the plate" which you usually see on its way to "Souvenir City" (yes Baseball Tonight is excellent).

D. Number of pitches thrown. The best get in and out as quick as possible.

Where in Liverpool are you mate? Do you have ESPN?

Huyton mate, yourself?

Yeah I have ESPN I thought the Sox would of been on it yesterday but it was Chicago when I checked I think. My stream on MLB.TV kept pausing too so I had to switch from HD to standard, wasn't the best quality.

Another thing to look at, although this can be subtle, is whether the catcher has to move his glove to catch the pitch. If he doesn't, then the pitcher is hitting his spots. No pitcher will do that 100% of the time but if a pitcher is hitting where the catcher is framing more of ten than not he's doing a good job.

This has little to no effect on the outcomes of games, regardless of what Gom would have you believe.

He's not talking about the catcher pulling pitches off the plate onto the plate. He's talking about the pitcher hitting the spot where the catcher sets up.

Fazakerley mate. (That place name could only be in Liverpool)

They just showed the Yankee's home stand against the Sox so showing the Tigers game straight after was unlikely to happen.

Check out Baseball Tonight, that will teach you a lot about the game.

I have given up on MLB.TV HD, I simply can't get it so I just watch in 4 bar normal now.

Made up that ESPN decided to keep ESPNA :D

Couldn't imagine life without it now.
