Don't forget The Lost Son Of Havana on ESPN starting now!

Tiant is made of a mixture of awesome and win.

One game and one hard hit ball.

Not to mention Brosuis' mental error.

Just saying hes not unhittable and he has blown games if you read my other post i'm not knocking his stuff, he has great stuff

There's no such thing as "unhittable". I don't think it's necessarily to point it out.

I hope every baseball fan and student of life is watching. Especially the young members here.

This is history.

He said Rivera is the best big game closer ever, which might be true but just pointing out an instance where he didn't get it done

Rivera' date=' and it's not even close.[/quote']

Really....how can you say that?

Here are Papelbons CAREER post-season numbers...

IP 25

H 10

ER 0

BB 6

K 22

That is a 0.00 ERA and an 0.57 WHIP.

Nobody is better than THOSE NUMBERS...not even Mariano.

Show me Mariano's first 25 post season innings.. show me.

Fine, but you're not refuting the original posters' point at all.

Also, if you're going to make a point about Rivera based on Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, it needs to come with a number of caveats.

-Rivera struck out the side in 8th inning.

-There was only one hard hit ball in the 9th inning.

-Rivera made an error (nothing to do with his pitching, which is what is being talked about).

-Brosius cost them the second out of the inning when he did not throw back across the diamond on Jay Bell's bunt.

The context in which this is being discussed is wrong.

What should be the basis of this argument is:

At this point of their careers, who is the most reliable pitcher of the two?

I'm well aware of his numbers. They are fantastic. He's been perfect in the playoffs. Rivera has absolutely disgusting playoff numbers as well.

One 2 or 3 run homer and Papelbon's and Rivera's ERA are probly pretty similar. It's just that Rivera has about 5 times as many innings pitched.

That's fair. My only point was about how relevant 2001 Game 7 is to the argument.

It's not in the context you were applying.

Agreed being discussed out of context, we can't compare Rivera's whole career to Paps when Rivera has many more innings, saves and years under his belt.

I don't really know why we are discussing this, they are both dirty closers. We should be talking about the Sox actually winning tonight!!!

I cherry picked a post. I'm sorry!

Who's pitching for Detroit tomorrow?

Someone used 2001 Game 7 as a point when they were discussing how good Rivera is.

The point was he wasn't perfect in the postseason.

While true, it's a moot point because Rivera's PS body of work quadruples Papelbon's.

However, his not being perfect is a fact.
