The story on Smoltz I'm getting now is the Sox wanted him to go to the minors and come back as a reliever. Smoltz refused to go to the minors (understandable)' date=' but it isn't clear he refused to go to the bullpen. I don't know why a pitcher like Smoltz would need to go to the minors first to be a reliever. He's a former all-star closer. Makes no sense. [/quote']

The guy just sucks right now. It really doesn't matter what you have done before, fi you suck, you get demoted until you figure it out. Period. Don't like it? Find the door. I have no pity for someone who bitches about having to go to the minors for a bit because they can't perform their job, while getting paid ridiculous sums of money. It's like a lawyer complaining about a temporary demotion when he can't win a case.

It looks like he is "finding the door" by leaving. If he refuses a trip to the minors, I guess the Sox have no other options for him.

No one is telling Smoltz what to do. I want him as far as possible from the organization. I was offering a commentary on the hypocrisy of players like Smoltz. He was insulted by the Braves offer of $1 million which he considered insulting and disrespectful due to everything he had done for the organization' date=' including cashing their inflated checks while he was on the DL. Boston showed him the appropriate respect on his terms. He sucked and didn't deserve to be in the rotation. They cut him, asked him to go to the minors and think about working out of the bullpen. He told them to stuff it after he had been a huge negative for this team. The point is that with these hypocritical divas the respect and honor travels only in one direction. I don't think anyone wants him to stay. He sucks, but he is a big diva with a huge ego.[/quote']

Excellent post.

I think Smoltz should have gone to the bullpen. Actually, I think he should have started out in the bullpen, but without Dice-K they are desperate for a no.3 starter. Still don't have one.

I don't think you ask a 42 yo HOFer to go to the minors. Pawtucket looks so bad right now I wouldn't want to play there. LOL. Smoltz should have gone to the bullpen to build up his stamina. His main problems were in the 4th-6th innings, indicating he needed more conditioning? Some 2-3 inning stints from the bullpen. But the Sox have a full bullpen right now, and a 1-inning mindset.

If Smoltz works out for them' date=' I can't wait to see how the ESPN clowns will call the Red Sox a bunch of idiots for giving up on him so quickly. O/U on how many Cardinal fan trolls we'll get?[/quote']

The Card's fans are orgasmic about this. Just as they were about Lugo.

The Cards message board has a thread dedicated to thanking the Sox.

Good luck to them.

Even though Lugo's s***ing the bed on defense again and is only a part-time player who can somewhat hit.

Exactly what he was here.

The Cardinals should try being in a division with the Rays and the Yankees and then see how long they would wait before pulling the plug on a guy like Smoltz. I wonder how the Sox would do if faced with Pittsburgh and Cinci repeatedly.

The Red Sox didn't give up on him. If he had gone to Pawtucket, he probably would have been back within 10 days.

He doesn't have the stamina to start right now, at least not in the AL East. Now, if he's pitching against the Pirates or one of the other sorry NL Central teams, it might not matter.

It actually speaks volumes about the quality of the Cardinals' opposition when they gladly take the Red Sox' castoffs in the belief that they can help them win.

While you do raise the valid argument, this is not how it will be portrayed.

Smoltz dashed, plain and simple, but I wouldn't bash Lugo. Guy did his job well here, and even though his defense was subpar, he could hit - something that the Sox have had trouble with recently.

He was a well below average hitter.

I laughed a little bit, when I saw a above average and Lugo in the same sentence. He sucked ass the entire time he was here.

I read Masterson had a good start yesterday for the Guardians vs the Angels. No ERs in 7 innings?

You wonder if the Sox hadn't signed those retreads, Penny and Smoltz, and had given more starting opportunities to Masterson and Buchholz, whether they would be further along right now. Granted they dealt Masterson for a terrific player, VMart, but maybe both those young pitchers should have been given more starting opportunities earlier in the season. They certainly couldn't have done any worse. Religious fans need to say a prayer for Penny against the Yankees tonight. LOL.

Smoltz line today:

5 inn 0R 3H 0BB 9k's

And the Cards are winning 5-1 after 6 innings. Of course, he does this after wrecking our season.

PADRES! He is facing the Padres.

Yeah San Diego not exactly a powerhouse, but 9 K's in 5 innings, and I watched a lot of it. Everything had life on it he was hitting 94, slider was biting hard, and was fooling everyone with his change up. They may be getting him at the right time.

The NL is going to make him look way better then he is.. We have all seen how good he is in the AL. It is just two different leagues.

I dont think people understand how much weaker the NL is compared to the AL
Thyere's a 0.22 difference in league ERA's , so the difference is not that big.

That's a weak argument.

The difference in talent is noticeable.
