Amen! The homer to markakis was thrown great' date=' the hitter was just mean to the old man, disrespecting the old people![/quote']

Smoltz will hit him next time out for such a blatant showing of disrespect by that ingrate Markakis.

Nice sig.

just got back from a weekend of camping. The Sox need to start figuring out how long they're willing to let this Smoltz experiment go despite the fact that he's clearly a liability in the rotation

At 1 and 4, Smoltz doesn't look like he's going anywhere. But, who's going to replace him?

Wasn't much offense today - the Sox are lethargic. Time to wake up!

The problem with Smoltz is only HALF the fact that he's been pretty bad and put us out of reach in games with zero chance to come back. He's also been a bullpen killer when he can't go more than 5 innings.

exactly, i dont mind TOO much if our 5th starter gives up 4 or 5 runs if he can go 6-7 innings, thats what makes Wake nice to have even if he gives up some runs he can go deep into games.

IMHO, once Wake gets back they should keep Buchholz and send Smoltz down until/if he figures it out. I think the Sox need to pursue another pitcher very aggressively. If Buccholz and Kelly are all it would take to get Halladay, do it. I'm sure they could get Halladay to sign a fair market-price contract loaded with incentives. If that can't happen, go get Haren, Cliff Lee, or some other top notch starter.

Why would Halladay ever agree to that?

By "fair market-price" contract, I mean a reasonable one that he would likely get on the FA market. I'd load it with incentives as a deal maker. He sure would get more money from NY than any other team, so the incentives would try to balance it out. I'm no contract expert, but I'm sure it's possible he would accept such a contract. It's basically a matter of getting traded and having a strong chance at a ring this year/next or taking a little more money from NY, but lose the opportunity to get a ring now.

wakefield could have come back yesterday, but he got a cortisone injection instead. He isnt coming back right away most likely and he could be an issue to follow

Hammer blow to right knee, 15-day DL with knee inflammation.

I have the hammer right here.

I'll f***ing fly over to Boston right now.

I think we have seen enough of Smoltz. We got 1 win out of him for $5 million. I wish Atlanta hadn't made an insulting offer and kept him. It was obvious from his last start that he has nothing left. He gave up three gargantuan homers in one inning. His days of dominating are ovah. Unfortunately, if the Red Sox don't make a trade, they have few options other than to keep him in the rotation. Penny, who was the 5th starter at the beginning of the season is currently the #3 starter behind Beckett and Lester. Wakefield doesn't have a target return date and he probably misses a couple of more starts. Dice K will not return any earlier than September, and that may be too late for this team. Buchholz is a green kid who has proved nothing and he can't seem to pitch beyond 4 or 5 innings. For all the depth that some thought they had a few weeks ago, it is becoming obvious that this starting rotation needs help. Wakefield can help, but if the team weathers this period and still advances to the playoffs, they only have two pitchers who am comfortable with the ball-- Beckett and Lester. I don't think that will be enough.

Blockbuster for V-Mart and Lee, perhaps?

That would cure all that ails us, but would completely deplete the farm.

If they sit back and do nothing, this team could head the way of the 2006 team. They have fallen from first place much earlier than that team, and many thought the 2006 team to be a beast even as it showed signs of crumbling. This team has a thin weak bench as did that team. But that team had two offensive monsters-- Ortiz and Manny. By the time Manny quit on the team that year, the team was already in a death spiral. Management did nothing and the 2006 team collapsed. Some people want to say that they were right to do nothing and point to 2007. That's faulty logic. 2007 did not result from the fact that the FO made no moves to help the team in 2006. 2007 resulted from 3 very costly off season acquisitions and the emergence of Dustin Pedroia. I was of the posters on this site who warned of the 2006 collapse early on, and I was met with all sorts of derision. This team is at a crossroads. If they do nothing, IMO, it is unlikely that they will overtake the Yankees, and they could slip out of playoff contention altogether. What they do in the next week will go a long way towards determining the fate of the 2009 team.

I agree with a700, as much as I like the job this FO has done I think this team will be made or broken over the next 5 days.

A big, big part of me is thinking however that Theo's big move was LaRoche, and will now say "We did our part, price of milk too expensive etc. etc., we really like our squad now"

This.

I'm all for keeping prospects, but they're both relatively young, proven performers.

The farm system in itself can only take us so far.

Part of the importance of the farm is to help supply ML talent as well.

Now's as good a time as ever.

Dodgers are rumored to be trying to make that deal.

They've got more chips than us to do so, unfortunately.

I don't think they do, really.

The Guardians desire Major League ready starting pitching first and foremost.

The Sox can provide it better than the Dodgers.

Well Buchholz and Bowden are both Major League ready in my opinion. :dunno: Bowden's just being blocked by Buchholz who WAS being blocked by Smoltz. Bowden's currently in AAA trying to work on developing his slider, which are why his stats don't seem as godly.

Oh yeah?

Dodgers, Guardians in talks, but what about?

The Dodgers and Guardians are talking. The question is about what.

Top club officials from both teams strongly denied a FOXSports.com report saying that the teams were in serious discussions about a blockbuster that would send left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney, one of the Dodgers' young rotation members and prospects.

Those names have at least surfaced in internal discussions on both sides, but a deal involving those specific players is not under consideration, the club officials said.

The Dodgers have had steady interest in Lee. They have not discussed Martinez with the Guardians, one source said, but some club officials evidently view Martinez as another potential upgrade.

One thing is clear: The Dodgers are exploring ways to improve a team that has built a wide lead in the NL West and the best record in the National League.

Both Lee and Martinez are under control not only for the rest of this season but all of 2010. The Guardians have both players under affordable club options for next season.

Young rotation member = Billingsley or Kershaw, better than anything the Sox can offer.

Logic Kilo.

Dealing either Kershaw or Billingsley would be really, really, really stupid.

Oh, and Rosenthal, really?

I take that with a mine of salt.

Kind of like when Gammons said the Sox rejected a Buchholz for Martinez deal?

It turned out to be ********.

I read that the Guardians turned the Sox down on Buch for V-Mart.
