Epstein on Lugo

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff July 17, 2009 04:56 PM

Theo Epstein addressed the decision to designate shortstop Julio Lugo for assignment, labeling the signing a mistake and blaming himself for it. Not much context now, but here were Epstein's initial, big-picture thoughts:

"I think it’s just a matter of putting our best team on the field," Epstein said. "That’s really the motivation behind it. Jed Lowrie, ready to be recalled tomorrow. Nick Green playing well and out of options. Felt like those two would be our best combination for the shortstop position at this point.

"I think ownership has been consistent that we’ll do what we need to do to keep the best possible team on the field. A sunk cost is a sunk cost. We’re sorry it didn’t work out better with Julio, obviously. But keeping him on the team wasn’t going to change that. Sometimes the best organizations admit their mistakes and they move on. And that’s what we’re doing here.

"This was one of the free agent signings that doesn’t work out. We were paying for past performance, not current performance. That’s the true definition of a mistake, and as the decision, that’s on me. We’ll just move on and be a better organization having gone through it, and we’ll make better decisions going forward."

The thing I like about Theo, is that he has balls. How many other teams just cut dead weight in the middle of the year like that, (I know most cant afford to) but the Yankees dont really ever cut their dead weight, they just frustrate their fans and keep shoving their (the FO) mistake in the fans faces every time they roll their dead weight out in the lineup/rotation. Moves like this, the Nomar deal and other little odds and ends are the reason I like Theo......he doesnt give a f*** what people think, he does what he had to do to put together the best possible team. Does he always make the right decision? No, but at least he has admitted his mistakes.

I like that he owns up to his mistakes but credit goes to John Henry for giving the go-ahead to foot the bill on a s***** deal

What looks like an easy decision, costs them like 13.5 mil or whatever. Seems easy enough, just get rid of the guy right? Good point, easy for us to pat Theo on the back (he will deserve it if we get anything for Lugo) when Henry's droppin 8 digits to get rid of the guy.

We do have an infinitly sold out stadium though, I guess that helps.

I am sure that Theo will be reminded of the Lugo failure when he gets his annual bonus.
