It'd be nice to have someone who could' date=' you know, hit homeruns. And play 3rd base without a walker.[/quote']

The man has already struck out 132 times.

His .277/.366 BA/OBP are fueled by an insane .368 BABIP.

Add to that his -2.8 UZR, and he might just need a walker to play 3rd.

I'm not advocating Reynolds per se but we do have a need at 3rd that needs to be filled by someone.

thank you. if that someone is Mark Reynolds so be it, I happen to like the guy, and if you put him at 1st hes less of a defensive liability and he is bound to improve a bit with the sox lineup v. the D-Backs lineup, me personally id take Gonzo or Martinez before Reynolds but we need someone with some offense.

Neaux.

If they're gonna go for an upgrade, why not go all out?

Is this farm system only used for promise of "the future"?, it's supposed to help us acquire premium Major League help as well, we have the pieces, it's time to use them.

Go get a real BAT, someone whose a good all-around hitter with power.

Agreed but we give up FAR more dealing for Gonzo than we do dealing for Reynolds, but that probably makes Martinez the smartest one to go for.

Like Adrian Gonzalez, he of the 5 HR and .749 OPS since June 1?

You try hitting in Petco and with protection from future Cooperstown members Will Venable and Edgar Gonzales.

Don't even bother looking for a power hitting 3B on this market, the only really good ones are on teams that are in the race. Dipre has one thing right: the best way to improve at corner infield is to use Youkilis at third and snag a 1B.

I wish Lowell were healthy. A healthy Lowell is one of the better 3B's in the league.

I think Petco and the Padres huurt his numbers alot...

Is there some viability to the concern of switching leagues?

I like AG but I am very, very hesitant to give up the farm for him.

I really don't think that Youkilis is a viable long term solution at 3B anymore. He is a much, much better defensive 1B.

Problem is, there aren't many other options.

And let me tell you one thing, the FO is high on him for a reason.

We're talking about a possible 1.100 OPS guy outside of Petco, since the man owns a .930+ lifetime OPS on the road, and since the rule is for players to fare much better in their home park, one could contend that Gonzales could smack around pitchers in a pitcher's haven like Fenway.

I agree which is why I put Martinez as being more likely being that the FO is conservative with his farm, and Reynolds is ALOT cheaper than AG...

agreed but we may have to settle with having youk at 3rd for now...

He is a very' date=' very, very good hitter. I very highly doubt he's a 1.000+ OPS player, though. That's elite level.[/quote']

Again, he owns a .930 lifetime OPS away from Petco after he was traded to SD.

There's usually a .70 to .100 OPS difference in home-away stats, but let's picture this.

AG moves from hitting most of his games in San Diego, San Fran Dodger, Humidor Coors and Arizona stadium to Fenway, Yanks, Camden, Tropicana and Rogers.

The difference is noticeable in park factor.

Where are you getting Reynolds name from and why would he be a lot cheaper? He's 25, plays a more premium position, makes league minimum and is posting a .916 OPS. That will not come at a reasonable price

Youks has played out as an average 3B when he's been asked to play there. He did come up through the minors as a 3B and there isn't an obvious problem with his range. I don't think it'd be a huge problem, but they won't want to wait much longer to move him if they're ever going to because as he ages, he's more set in his position and he's going to lose some of the mobility and athleticism that allowed him to play 3B without picking up reps there to increase his savvy and stay at that position. That's when you might get a problem.

I agree, I think he would be lethal at fenway, from one report i believe i heard that his Natural swing is perfect for fenway, I dont know too much about that but ive heard that it would vastly improve his Doubles and HR...

maybe but I dont think we are seeking Reynolds either he was just a name i threw out there that id seen on a few random sites (i know i know thats a great source) but that wasnt my point, ive been saying that i think Martinez is most likely to happen and AG is the one that helps us the most in the short term Reynolds was just another name...

To be honest I'm starting to think Martinez isn't the answer either. He's slumping badly right now and his OPS is down to just .833. Which isn't so bad as a catcher but extremely mediocre for a 1B and not worth top prospects. I have a feeling Martinez is not the same hitter he was from 04-07 and that we'd be overpaying if we traded Bowden/Masterson+ (which was actually turned down by the Guardians not the Sox).

I like Gonzalez but my philosophy would not be to sell the farm on a 1B. I think now that his OPS has normalized after a ridiculous start that he's probably going to settle in as a .870-.900 guy as a member of the Padres and probably a bit higher considering leaving Petco but a hit going to better AL pitching. That's a great hitter and would be valuable in our lineup but IMO he's in a lower class right now then Pujols/Fielder/Youkillis/Tex/Cabrera/Morneau/Howard/Berkman (which just goes to show how high-producing 1B are not all that uncommon).

The more I look at the options the more I'm content to staying put. I think the price on Gonzalez and Halladay is too high to make it worth it. Maybe Cliff Lee can be had for a package without Buchholz but that remains to be seen. I'd prefer to hold onto the chips and try to make a run at Hanley in the offseason.

I like the idea of getting Hanley but Im pretty fond of Gonzo too (tie always goes to the SS) its just really easy to get reactionary right now...its hard for me to say we are fine right now...
