Out of the young homegrown kids on the squad, who do you want to have in Boston for their entire career. I was thinking about this and my first thought was Lester, but now I'm reconsidering.

Extremely hard choice between Lester/Pedroia/Papelbon, but I'll go with Papelbon. The level of domination he's had over his (short) career with the Red Sox is basically unmatched by any MR/CL in this franchise's history.

EDIT: Not to mention 25.0 innings of scoreless baseball in the postseason, that is insane

I'm more in the line of thinking that the health and effectiveness of a pitcher over a period of 10-15 years is more unpredictable than just slotting in Dustin Pedroia with his leadership and versatility in the lineup. Don't get me wrong though, in terms of overall value, it's definitely Lester

I don't think it's so clear that Pedroia > Youkilis. What Pedroia is doing is great for a middle infielder, but Youkilis emerged as a middle of the order bat out of literally nowhere. I'm not even sure Billy Beane saw him developing this much power. Also, Youks has versatility over Pedroia, who plays one position to Youk's two (if you add in short for Peddy, I get to add corner outfield for Youkilis)

the fact that Pedroia is four years younger aside, I see Youkilis breaking down sooner rather than later just cause the guy gets so banged up

I went with Lester, because it's easy to get a power 1B. But I wouldn't make a verdict on Youk's career potential just yet. He's shown surprising improvement every year. I remember pointing out after 2007 how his AVG, HR and SLG have gone up every year. I didn't think he'd become this good though.

For the sake of this discussion I'm going to assume all the players stay healthy

As difficult as it appears to be to find a dominant left handed pitcher, I'd go with Youk. He plays every day, can play GG 3rd and 1st base, and occasional LF. He is an on-base machine that has good power. He is an impact player that has an impact on just about every game. Not just every 5th game.
