I acknowledged his injury problems about a thousand posts ago. That's why you could get a two-time batting champ for someone as cheap and insignificant as Aaaron Bates. If he was still Nomar' date=' he'd cost a lot more.[/quote']

He's cheap for a reason. He can't field, he can't stay healthy and he isn't much of a hitter anymore.

Beckett's at 72 pitches through 7 innings. His ERA is down to 3.40 and if he does manage the CG shutout it'll be down to 3.35.

You don't happen to know his ERA since his atrocious April do you?

Other than the sentimental value, what makes him a better player? He's a .267/.300/.387 hitter who can't field or stay healthy. Bates is a great defensive 1B, and you gotta believe he could do better than a .687 OPS.

whether or not you are right our chances of getting Nomar are about 9.7% our chances of keeping Bates are about 88.37% so live with what you got.
Should we only discuss the deals that the FO actually makes? That would certainly cut down on the activity on this forum. Maybe we should also limit our discussion to the in-game moves that Tito makes and not the moves that he should have made. After all, we have no choice but to live with the moves that he actually makes... right?

While discussing moves that won't happen, why not acquire Gabe Kapler?

He has better speed than Nomar, can play OF and occasional 3rd.

Plus, Kapler's wife is smokin'. Nomar's is swine.

The 33 games he has played this year prove that despite his .885 career OPS and the fact that he has never had a sub .700 OPS during any season. He's just a better player to have on the bench in a penant race this season than Bates.

Kapler hasn't played 3rd in the majors before. He's played first a few times though.

I was just going to say that he's never played 3rd. I didn't know he's played 1st before. What team was that for?

You don't know anything about Bates a700!! Yeah, he's older than most players in the minors. He also plays for a team that is completely stacked on the MLB club. If he were in Seattle last year he probably would have started at 1B over Miguel Cairo in some games. The level of the player and their amount of MLB experience is COMPLETELY a function of how good the parent club is.

Bates was a 3rd round pick and his numbers have justified his continued climb through the system. He's not Lars Anderson as a prospect, but he's not horrible either. He's made some nice defensive plays, he's had 3 hits today, and he's capable of playing the OF as well.

I just don't see any value in Nomar, other than allowing some of us to go back into his heyday every time he comes to the plate.

I WOULD have a problem with Nomar at the dish in a big game against the Yankees because DESPITE ALL OF THE EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY, Nomar continues to swing wildly at first pitches and has never taken on the Sox philosophy of hitting. This works fine when you're juicing and capable of ripping shots into the monster, but when you're an injury prone utility infielder it isn't acceptable on a club like this. He hasn't had an OBP over .330 in the past three years.

He played 1st for Sox once in 05 and once in Texas in 2002. He played for a combined 4 innings, so it looks like it was an emergency situation and he came in and played.

Honestly, I may be overstating my distaste for the idea of adding Nomar. I like the guy, I love what he did for the Sox and I wouldn't be TOO pissed if he came back. It just feels like a step in the wrong direction for this club. There's nothing that tells me he has great success in the clutch, nothing that says he's a great playoff hitter, nothing that says he's likely to stay healthy or to contribute much.

Yeah, we all like him, he's a great Red Sox player historically, but this club has moved beyond their need for nomar.

I was just kidding. But I seem to remember at least one instance where Kapler finished a game at 3rd for the Sox.

Most importantly, His wife is prime quiff.;)

exactly, we should just let him keep being a fenway hero on another team, i think a lot of ppl will end up having different feelings towards Nomar if he played and f***in blew.

:lol::lol::lol:

Come on, he's a SHELL of the player he used to be. The last two years he had a .792 OPS in similarly limited at bats and a .700 OPS. He's just not good anymore.
