I am going to ask a question from a different perspective.

If you are JP Ricciardi, why would you choose NOT to deal Halladay?

1. The Blue Jays stand no chance of competing with the top 3 in the division this year, or the following, and they know they will be unable to re-sign him.

2. Halladay at this point, probably wants to be traded, instead of pitching for a dead team once again this September, putting up HOF numbers for a s***** club.

3. The Jays will probably not get much more for Halladay than right now, when teams like Boston are desperate for his services to solidify their rotation as they march forward to the playoffs?

Why would they not deal him right now at the deadline? Will JP be this stubborn? This deal could make or break his run as team GM, he might not even be around long enough to actually make the trade in the offseason, so why not do it, see just what Buchholz gives them and maybe save his job? I think the trade could actually HELP his status, unless Clay completely bombs.

You think the Jays have no chance of winning next year' date=' but you have no idea if Ricciardi feels that way. He might think that with a healthy McGowan and Litsch, the Jays might have the pitching to win next year if they keep Halladay. Personally, I don't think they'll be good enough to win next year, with or without Halladay, but Ricciardi might disagree, and that would defeat your entire theory.[/quote']

If he does' date=' he's fooling himself, but you're probably right,[/quote']

I have honestly had this conversation with myself a million times haha. Does he really think they are gonna be able to contend next year? If they are not he is going to get much less then they will now for him. He has to think they will though, he's in denial. You would think getting prospects in a trade now might buy him time.

Riccardi will wind up looking pretty stupid if he doesn't trade Halladay with his value at highest, and I'll be scratching my head if he doesn't take Buchholz/Bowden/Masterson+Anderson, etc. or whatever the Rangers are offering

JP is gonna over play his hand like the Twins did with Johan. And the package that he gets will reflect that.

Afterthe next turn in our rotation produces a 3 outings of 5 innings or less, you might reconsider your position. The moves today will not help this team catch the Yankees. The only positive that I take from today is that Tampa did not make any moves.

If we couldve gotten Halliday for Bard and Bucholz coupled with the addition of Vmartinez I wouldve done it and we still would have gone into the playoffs with a Halliday Lester Becks rotation.

I think that would be enuff to get us over the top in October and again next year.

We got a ton of dead weight here that will be coming off by the time we need to reupp these 3 men and our drafting and development of pitching under this group of owners has been nothing short of f***ing awesome....Roy Halliday has more quality innings in July than these 2 guys have had in their careers and that includes a no hitter...We werent getting him for nothing.

That said we didnt give up too much for Vmart and all in all its good when NY doesnt add the best pitcher best hitter and best reliever available as they usually do each July 31st

But that is just a 5 inning pitcher' date=' and he will not return until September.[/quote']

I meant when he'd make it thru 6 ;)

JP is going to look like an idiot next year when he'll get even less for the Doc

there's no way the Jays are contending next year and the Doc wont sign there again

The FO also thinks that Clay Buchholz has the stuff to be an ace in this league, and that aces are hard to find. Trading Buchholz for Halladay was a risk in-itself, let alone moving Bard.

Who would have been taking the risk? I view it differently. Toronto would be taking the risk that Buchholz would have become an ace. Halladay is already an ace-- a top 5 ace. There was no risk in getting him. The only reason that I would have hesitated to make this deal would have been that I wouldn't have wanted to rip 2 guys out of the current bullpen. If all they wanted was Bard and Buchholz and nothing else, I would have done the deal, and I would have tried to get Cleveland to take a minor leaguer instead of Masterson.

I don't think that's all they wanted though. They still wanted 4 or 5 guys, just two of those guys to be Buchholz and Bard.

It's simply too steep of a price to pay for 1.5 years (and it might only be 2 months) of Roy Halladay.

That's possible, but if they only wanted the two guys-- Buchholz and bard, they should had done it. Also, they should have explored Haren more and taken a better run at Cliff Lee.

I definitely agree on all your points, but they Jays wanted more than Buch and Bard.

Lee should have been a target. It would have been sweet to land him in a package deal with Martinez.

I bring this up again, something I posted last night. What the f*** was he thinking? Overplayed his hand? He may have just unofficially lost his job. What a moron, now hes stuck with a pitcher who is prob pissed off. He could have been pitching for a world series contender, now hes just wasting innings.

If I am Halladay, I go out with a fluke injury, tell JP to f*** himself and demand a trade in the offseason, where JP will get nothing compared to the offers he was getting over the past couple weeks. What a retard.

JP was getting fired regardless. I agree he should have dealt Halladay, because when the clock struck 4:01, Halladay's trade value decreased by 50%.
