Here's what he said:

"I guess the main thing was that they weren’t really expecting to find fluid in there, but they ended up finding a significant amount of fluid so I think that’s a good thing. They took the bad stuff out and put the good stuff in. I’m a little bruised from the injection itself but I do feel I have a lot more mobility. I think I’ll be able to tell more tomorrow when I get stretched out and stuff."

Sounds good so far, we'll have to see how he progresses.

I smell bovine byproduct. I can['t imagine Lowell saying anything else even if the injections were a complete and dismal failure.

I doubt Lowell and the team would go to the trouble of making up an actual amount of CC's of fluids that they drained from his hip prior to the injection.

I had a similar injection in my knee four years ago. It had little effect. And my knee was more irritated from the injection. As a rule, inter-articular injections are damaging to the soft tissue surrounding the area of concern. That had to be a long needle! Ouch!

Result vary widely. My knee was junk. I eventually had it scoped. I hope he recovers soon and derives maximum benefit from the injection. At best, the results will be temporary. He'll need subsequent injections.

Yeah, Francona said he had the same injection and it didn't do anything. But Brad Mills had the same injection and it worked miracles.

My mother and grandma both have bad knees, they both had the procedure and it worked wonders.

Draining fluid from his hip means that there was inflammation in the area. Not good especially after someone just had surgery. I would assume that over time, the fluid would reaccumulate and cause more issues. The lubricant shot is a short lived thing. Over time, it gets absorbed and the hip gets back to what it was. In short, this is a temporizing measure. But with the fact that he's having a good amount of inflammation and fluid in the joint, I think he goes under the knife again after the season.

Everyone but you sees the fluid as a good sign, because it means the discomfort he was feeling was not structural. You'll have to forgive, but I'm gonna trust the team's medical opinions over your medical expertise ;)

Sorry Dutchy. Jacko, despite what others here may say, is an M.D..

What he says makes perfect sense. When a joint becomes irritated fluid builds up. There has to be an underlying reason for the irritation. Torn tissue, friction in the joint, arthritis, etc..

I'm hoping for the best, but things don't look good.

It would appear to be friction in the joint, since they injected him with a lubricant. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this, but Francona said worst case scenario he goes on the DL for two weeks to give his hip some time to heal. Doesn't sound like it's anything that could keep him out for an extended period of time.

Lowell reported that he most likely won't be traveling to Baltimore to join the team either Tuesday or Wednesday, and views Thursday as a key day in regards to determining whether or not he will have to go on the 15-day disabled list. "If I don't have a big improvement in mobility and flexibility and all of that I have to believe their going to think of something DL-wise, but if I feel really good I might play Friday," he said. "So Thursday is probably the day we chart what's going on."

DL stint upcoming for sure

If they don't repeat the mistake they made last year.

The thing to do the first time Lowell showed signs of injury is shut him down until the postseason. if he's going to aggrivate the hip with baseball activities let him do it in October, not July. We do it that way, we have time to trade for a 1B or 3B last year to help us contend and maybe Lowell gets healthy, plays in October, and we win #8.

That's also the thing to do here. Shut him down, far far longer than he wants to be, and get him properly healthy before even letting him take infield practice. We've got another year of the guy and if we want it to be a good year, we have to override his impluse to try to play through the pain.

I'm in the camp of if there is fluid, there is an underlying issue causing the fluid...and that it will return. Seems to me that if he's having issues months and months after the surgery, that this could require another surgery or be an issue that never gets totally corrected but requires constant treatment going forward.

Bailey won't cut it long term. there has to be a deal. Ideally I'd want to find an RHH 3B but I don't think that guy's out there right now. We're going to have to become a bit more lefthanded if we want a quality replacement.

Maybe we could do a deal with the Angels for Chone Figgins, but his price is likely to be inflated because he's having a good year. or maybe a deal with the Tigers for Carlos Guillen, although he's not the best 3B in the history of ever.

I'd rather see Carter get a shot but they most likely want the right handed bat on the bench.

We already have two backup outfielders on the roster. Carter's only played 11 games at 1B in the past two years (all in AAA), while Bailey spends the majority of his time there.

That's it? I always thought he played more 1B than that. Oh well, they are both bad options long term.

Teahen, LaRoche and Johnson are probably your best bets, and of the 3, you're most likely to get laRoche for an acceptable price in talent.

I don't see a lot of really good alternatives out there.
