He can't go to the minors without going on the DL. And yes you are right' date=' if he goes on the DL he can then pitch some rehab games.[/quote']

My understanding is it's not that he can't go to the minors....it's just that he has to agree to being sent there...can't be demoted w/out his permission, unlike, say, Bard.

Hence the ego coming into play. He'd rather have a phantom injury than agree to a plain demotion.

Can't really blame him for that I suppose...we all have egos and in cases like his it'd be humiliating, even if you want to be a team player.

What irks me is that they'd agree to a contract like that to get a player, tho. Doesn't seem like good business...

Here's slightly more info from the just-posted Globe bit:

Daisuke Matsuzaka will miss at least his next start in the rotation and an MRI and other tests will be performed, Red Sox Manager Terry Francona said Saturday afternoon. [...]

Franconca called the conversation "very honest" and said that Matsuzaka attributed at least some of the trouble to pitching in the World Baseball Classic in the offseason. [...]

Francona said that he has no specific medical plans yet, or any timetable for Matsuzaka's return to pitching. He met with the media just minutes after the meeting and stressed the importance of patience.

With luck, he's gone for quite a while. I really want to see what Smoltz will bring. If he doesn't cut it, bring on Buck.

I have no ill will for Dice. I just want the Sox to have a fair chance at winning a game. I hope that whatever is done with Dice will not effect Bard's slot in the pen. I think it's in the Sox best interest, short and long term, to develop Bard at this level.

ahh the dicek dil-enima...He has sucked for so long now there is definitely something wrong here.

100 mil, NTC, and has to agree to go to the minors?

looks like the red sox brass got "PEARL HARBORED".

Ahh hindsight...100mil, hmm what other players could we have spent that money on? Maybe pay off our shortstops of the pasts salaries?

Question? Can we ship him back to japan? Dont we get a waranty like on auto's?

I want my f'n money back...or send me a new jap that CAN pitch <_>

If I was Dice-K, I'd rather except a minor league assignment and get my s*** together, then to hit the DL with "shoulder" issue. Right now it may seem like the worse of the two, but when he hits FA, teams are going to look at his DL/physical history. And this is just going to be another black mark on his record. And it will raise some flags for certain teams. But if AJ can get a 5 year deal then maybe Dice-K won't have too much trouble.

That's pure nonsense Chica. He's terrible this year but he was very good the previous 2.

Really? He was very good the previous 2? What do u look at wins and losses only?

Year Team G GS W L SV BS HLD CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA

2007 BOS 32 32 15 12 0 0 0 1 0 204.2 191 100 100 25 80 201 4.40 1.32 .246

This is what u consider good?Sure 15 wins..but we had a different lineup . he gave up 100 ER?

Go look at the game logs for 2007 yourself then tell me how good he was ok?

he made it through 7 innings or better 14 times in 32 games. In his 15 wins we avg @ 9 runs a game.

He got us 15 and im grateful.

Go look up your own stats for 2008. Im grateful again for the 18 wins.

he made it through 7 innings or better 9 times in 29 games. 167 IP

But I watch the games and watching him MOST times it has NOT been pretty for 2 + years.

for 100 mil plus..I expected more after the adjustment year. The FO must have too cuz they made me believe we had gotten ourselves a stud.

IMHO of course.

If your calling it the way you see it means Dice-K is sucking.

Then you are, indeed, calling it right.

I really wish he wasnt but he is and the fact that in his last game he couldnt even put the ball where it needed to be says to me there is something wrong here. Do you think pitching in the WBC hurt him? I can't say for sure but he needs to fix what is broken.

I'm am most happy, that his departure from the team is not going to hurt us. We will be just fine without him.

Isn't it wonderful to have a surplus of pitchers?:D

At this point, even the FO and Dice-K himself have acknowledged that the WBC hurt him and now it sounds like they're basically gonna start his season over

Daisuke Matsuzaka has been placed on the 15-day DL, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said on Sunday, and he hinted it could take months for the struggling right to recover.

"It's not going to be a two-week DL thing," said Francona. "We have a lot of work ahead of us to get him back to being Daisuke."

I think there's a good chance he may be done for the season. If he comes back this year I'm not expecting it for a good while anyway.

I'm curious as to why it was Dusty Brown that got called up. Is it really necessary to have 3 catchers on the roster?

Probably an insurance policy for Kottaras if he gets injured today and Tek doesn't have to play if that happens. Also, we're going into 2 NL ballparks with no DH, makes more sense to carry a hitter instead of a pitcher.

is it too simple to think that they're just giving a guy a brief trip to the majors after having spent 8 years in the minors?

This move pretty much nixes any Penny trade thoughts. The Sox would have to be blown away by a deal, or think one of Buchholz/Bowden/Masterson can hold down the spot. I would guess we won't see Dice-K until September at the earliest by the sounds of it.

I kinda agree. Brown hit well last year, and at least maintained a good OBP this year, and is supposed to be a good backup catcher. He's worth a flier and this might be a favor to Brown to help him latch on with another team even if he can't stick here.
