So... who pitches the next 5 innings? I seem to recall that the bullpen got a bit of work last night.

I wouldn't mind seeing Wake eat a couple innings. Better than blowing out the pen.

It's amazing how reactionary people are around here. Yeah, Dice is working through some s*** and he's looked mediocre at times. He also is a very accomplished and impressive pitcher who finished 4th in the Cy Young voting LAST YEAR.

The same people that ballwash Penny after 3-4 impressive starts are calling for Matsuzaka's head. It's pretty lame loyalty, if you ask me. 1st place team, great (plentiful) rotation, organization that is the envy of all in baseball... and you want to send one of our longterm pitching options out to pasture after a slow start and some injury.

DL =/= pasture.

I think the reason a lot of us feel this way towards DiceK is because his approach to pitching. It's pure agony watching him pitch and many of us are worried he will fall off the table over the next couple of years.

I hope he becomes a dominant pitcher again, but I just can't stand to watch him pitch.

burning raft = pasture

It also =joke. But I get what you're saying. We shouldn't trade Matsuzaka or sacrifice him to the Gods or whatever, he obviously is a better pitcher than this. But with Smoltz and Buchholz available, there's no reason to have the 8 ERA and 2 WHIP wonder in the rotation.

Haven't you felt the same way about Wakefield for the past, say, 7 years? I know I have. I just learn to live with it. Except that instead of throwing beachballs to home plate, Matsuzaka can actually force guys to swing and miss. Wake gets Ks too, but they are unpredictable at best.

Of course we shouldn't actually trade him for anything less than a great package, we are just joking/frustrated.

No, I have actually always loved Wake. But you can't really compare the 2. One is a 4-5 starter with a pretty minimal salary, while one is supposed to be a 1-2 starter with a hefty salary.

Except that this was a bargain that the Sox made when they signed him. Can't trade him, can't send him down. Trade off is they get enormous props in Japan for signing him and treating him well. Think someone like Yu Darvish pays attention to how Dice K and Saito and Okajima are treated? I do.

It isn't much different than when other teams overpay by massive amounts of money to get guys who end up sucking at the middle or end of their contracts (Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, etc.,), except that Matsuzaka doesn't cost as much (salary-wise... he's about the same in overall investment) and he's actually a GOOD pitcher when he's on.

I wasn't seriously suggesting immolating a starting pitcher, by the way. I was venting frustration at five or six consecutive low-quality starts.

It's amazing how reactionary people can be when other people say things they obviously don't mean. (see, I can do it too)

So what do you suggest we do with Smoltz?
