Going to have to agree with NESN peeps ... the ump is a bit trigger happy. But entertaining as hell. heh

At least Tek already had his 2 HR's.

What the hell happened to get Tek and Terry ejected?

Red Sox-Twins: Updates

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 28, 2009 03:05 PM

(3:30, top seventh, 3-1 Red Sox)

Fireworks here in the seventh. In a span of about 10 minutes the catchers and managers of both teams have been thrown out of the game. In the bottom of the 7th, Jason Varitek turned around and argued a called ball on a pitch by Josh Beckett that seemed to be right down the middle of the plate. Varitek, who has hit two homers in the game, was ejected by home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. Francona came out to defend his catcher and at one point mouthed the words "What the (bleep) is the matter with you?" He was run as well. In the top of the inning, both catcher Mike Redmond and manager Ron Gardenhire were ejected arguing a call at the plate by Tichenor in which Jeff Bailey slid and appeared to get a hand on the plate and beating the throw. The replays we saw here in the press box were pretty inconclusive as we never saw Bailey's hand touch the plate. Redmond went ballistic and was tossed. DH Joe Mauer had to come into catch. Gardenhire then argued the call and was also tossed. Earlier in the inning, Varitek, who doesn't talk about his hitting, struck for his second homer of the game, 10th of the year against Swarzak giving the Sox a one-run lead. Swarzak is now out of the game in the 7th after throwing 102 pitches allowing two runs on five hits. Jeff Bailey reached base after varitek's homer with a bloop double to right, that fell in between the shortstop and right-fielder. Julio Lugo made two attempts to move the runner to third, but couldn't do it, fouling off both bunts. But he got Bailey to third on a line drive to right field.

beckett got pissed at a ball call, and tek turned around and argued kinda in reaction to becketts reaction and then tito came out in reaction to teks reaction, so they were all arguing balls and strikes

Thanks for that. How aggro did Terry and Tek get? Or is the ump just that much of a pussy?

imo, the ump was trigger happy about ejecting, but whatever. They didn't get that animated before the ump waved them out in like 3 seconds.

I think, too, that Tek jumped up largely because Becket was steaming on the mound, and Tek was trying to make sure the ump didn't focus on Beckett.

I had to leave to go pick-up my Daughter. So Paps didn't screw the pooch. Good. As for Ellsbury's streak, oh well! Guess he'll just have to start another one. The Sox bats were underwhelming in this series. They need to do more, a lot more, in Toronto. Beckett was very good today other than a dinger and 4 walks.

3 hits, 1 run, 8 K.

I re-watched the 7th on FSNO instead of NESN, and yeah, Tek was protecting Beckett.

Ump calls a ball, Beckett hollered "God damn it" and something else towards the ump w/lots of head gesturing, ump reacts, Tek jumps up. Heh. Yup, entertaining.

Can't argue strikes! That was clearly a ball. I think that Tek's bitch was that he believed that Beckett had had a similar pitch called a strike. In any case turning around and getting in an Ump's face isn't cool as far as umps are concerned. Veritek also probably said something unsavory. He deserved to get run.

Francona just added fuel to the fire. Gone. It was fun to watch.

Tek couldn't care less about arguing balls and strikes, he was doing it so Beckett didn't get ejected instead

That seems to be the consensus. He did his job. Tito too. But arguing strikes is against the rules and is bound to get you the boot.

True enough. I think what some are chattering about tho is how quick the ump was to make those calls. I've seen plenty of umps let players mouth off several lines and not toss them out. Tito didn't even have time to get there to try and protect Tek, tho it seemed he left the bench almost as soon as it started.

Just depends on the ump. Some give a bit more leeway, some don't, that's all.
