In FL and in 2007 he threw his changeup 10% or more of the time. In 2006, 2008, and this year, it's been less, with this year being an all-time low at 5.8%. The fact that he hasn't mastered this pitch and is able to throw it consistently year in and year out is pretty telling to me in regards to his offseason work ethic. If he had Schilling's approach to pitching, he'd have multiple Cy Youngs, IMO.

Beckett is an enigma. He looks like a cool customer and he is throwing some serious cheese. But he is laboring through ABs and gave up a homer to a guy who can't hit. It really is interesting to see how far Beckett and Lester have fallen thus far this yr. 2 yrs ago, Beckett was more animated and had much better control. He also could tell you what was coming and nobody could hit it. Now, he's leaving everything up.

I am amazed that Beckett got through 7 innings. It took him 120 pitches. I attribute this outing more to the suckiness of the Seattle offense tahn anything else.

 

BTW without Papi in the lineup, the DH spot is still an automatic out.

Tons of pitches early. Really had trouble getting through the at bats through 5. In the 6th and 7th, he was vintage. Sox fans should take heart in his performance, because I thought he looked more like his normal self last night than any other start this yr.
