What to do at catcher?

Since the all-star break the Red Sox have three of the AL's top fifteen hitters in SLG' date=' and four in the top twenty-five.[/b'] None of them are David Ortiz.

 

He's definitely not the hitter he was a few years ago and unfortunately his area of biggest decline is in his average. Interestingly, his IsoD is still .092--better than it was in 2002, 2003 or 2004. He is a more disciplined hitter this year than he was in those years, and it shows in his walk totals. However, he can't seem to make contact as well so his average has plumeted, thus killing his OBP and his OPS. He still manages to hit the ball hard when he hits it but he's not anywhere near the threat he used to be.

 

 

Catching-wise this team will benefit from having VMart at catcher and looking to upgrade themselves on the corners moving forward. They should resign Martinez to 3 years with an option for the 4th at $12m/yr. He's on pace to make $7m next year, so that's an immediate $5m raise and 3 years of $12m on top of that. He's a good hitter and is consistent, either as a 1B or a C, and should be moving forward.

 

I didn't know the ASB was June 1st.

V-Mart and Tek should be able to rotate like they are this season. Tek, Papi, and Lowell all need time off. And fortunately for the Sox, V-Mart can fill in for all 3 in one way or another with few to no downgrades at the give position(Youk obviously playing 3B, not V-Mart).

 

The Sox should sign him to a 4 year deal with a 5 year option. They can always move him to 1B/DH permanently down the road if they decide to pursue another everyday Catcher, like Joe Mauer.

VMart is not a good catcher. He also doesnt know the pitchers right now. That is a pretty rough combo necessitating Varitek's presence. After a full spring training and an offseason where he'll be studying his pitchers, I would assume that VMart would go from the defensive supersuck he has shown this run through with Boston, to his standard suck. And, as we have seen in NY, you can win a lot of games with an offense first, bad defensive catcher.

You've got to have your head examined (or maybe your eyes checked) though if you're going to debate the fact that he's not at all a good defensive catcher. He's not a good receiver, the only thing that makes him a premiere catcher is his bat. If he were so great behind the plate Cleveland wouldn't have played him at first almost half of the season while he was there (47 games at first compared to 52 played behind the plate while with Cleveland this year).

Martinez played more at 1b this year because they felt that starting Shoppach behind the plate with Martinez at 1b was a better option than Martinez at C and whatever scrub (Garko who was traded, Andy Marte who stinks) at 1b.

Please guys, Martinez is an adequate catcher, as is Posada, but they both leave something to be desired behind the plate. As for us missing out on VMart, I'm fine with that. Posada can still do the job, Molina is arguably the best backup catcher in baseball, Cervelli did very well in his time in the bigs this year, and Montero and Pillitiere aren't too far away. We're good fellas, thanks. You should be more concerned with your team and your captain than our catcher, Last I checked Posada was hitting over .280 with 21 homers and 76 RBIs with a .358 OBP and .529 Slugging. All of which s*** on Varitek's numbers. Martinex does have Posada beat in Average, RBIs, and OBP...I'll give you guys that one. But as far as I can see we're in pretty good shape.

Agreed. The only way this changes is if Lars Anderson breaks out. He's a good fill in for the short term though. I think he could be a full-time catcher if they needed him to be, but that he's better off playing 50/50 1b and c.
