Daniel Bard continues his torrid pitching stretch with a legendary save Wednesday in Triple-A.

Bard struck out the side in just nine pitches - all strikes. He was one of the best pitchers in camp, but was sent to the minors in order to develop further as a closer rather than spend time in middle relief in the bigs. Bard has allowed just one run over nine innings while amassing 16 strikeouts to just three walks. He will be a dynamic closer one day, or at least a lights-out setup man for Jonathan Papelbon.

Bard seems to have found whatever it is that the Sox thought he could find. His stuff alone would have him competing with top-notch veterans like Oki and Saito for that setup role pretty quickly. If he keeps throwing strikes there's no reason he's not the pen's 2nd best pitcher... Or an extremely valuable trade chip with words like "dynamic closer" with so many years left before he gets expensive.

In his first 9 innings of AAA work, Bard currently has an ERA of 1, a k/9 of 16, and a .037 BAA. He's walked 3 and surrendered a solitary hit. Textbook definition of a filthy and auspicious beginning.

When we get Bard up here to go with Papelbon, Ramirez, Oki and Delcarmen, and then if we can spare Masterson to the pen too, this bullpen is going to be legendary.

Yeah, that about sums up what this bullpen is going to be once Bard comes up.

. Yep, our very own version of the nasty boys .

I love how they make sure to mention that all nine pitches were strikes. Like someone can strike out three batters in a row on eight strikes and a ball.

Yeah, and Mauer's back will blow out and Pap's shoulder will fall off within 2 years of signing. Thame old thycle.

Papelbon and Mauer will be Yankees within the next couple of years

I'm not so sure. At some point the Yankees will realize that they're spending a lot more money than they need to. Mauer is Mr. Injury. To me, he's a perfect example of who the Yankees shouldn't blow others out of the water to sign. I've thought they were getting ready to smarten up a few times over the past few years, but the franchise seems to get nervous at the last minute and always pulls the trigger on FAs.

Papelbon seems like a guy the Sox will make a solid offer to and who might turn it down. Possibly going to the Yankees as the highest bidder. There will then be a discussion about how crappy the FO is, about how the Yankees are once again the better franchise because they're willing to spend and the Sox aren't, etc., Meanwhile, Papelbon will break down a few years later no matter what team he is on.

Are you at all familiar with the Steinbrenner family?

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Papelbon. But like Example said, he could turn down a good offer and take the highest offer.

But if Bard continues on his pace, he might make us forget Papelbon very quickly when the time comes.

It depends on injuries to the bullpen but if things stay the way they are, I'll say September

Could be up around the TDL is the Sox move some players. But if everything stays the same(unlikely), probably September.
