Lowrie will visit Dr. Tom Graham, a noted hand specialist, today in Baltimore to have his ailing wrist examined further. Three options will be discussed: further injections and rehab, which would sideline the shortstop for a month; a minor surgical procedure in which a bone would be removed, requiring approximately six weeks of recovery time; and a more complicated surgery that likely would end Lowrie’s 2009 season.

Not good news.

Jed Lowrie will not require surgery on his ailing left wrist.

Lowrie got the OK from Dr. Thomas Graham on Wednesday in Baltimore. He received a cortisone injection and headed back to Boston. "It confirmed the original diagnosis, which is good, so they injected the area at both locations of the discomfort," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "He's going to be placed in a splint for about five days before he begins his strengthening."

Brewers are probably on speed dial with a package they've requested for JJ Hardy already in Theo's hands.

who knows' date=' if Nick Green keeps this up, I could live with him and Lugo[/quote']

Nick Green won't keep this up. His whole history suggests he's playing over his head. This is like Alex Cora's resurgence in 2007, make use of it while you have it but don't trick yourself into relying on it.

Shortstops

Orlando Cabrera (35)

Alex Cora (34)

Craig Counsell (39)

Bobby Crosby (30)

Adam Everett (33)

Chris Gomez (39)

Alex Gonzalez (32) - $6MM mutual option with a $500K buyout

Khalil Greene (30)

Jerry Hairston Jr. (34)

John McDonald (35)

Marco Scutaro (34)

Miguel Tejada (36)

Omar Vizquel (43)

Jack Wilson (32) - $8.4MM club option with a $600K buyout

that's the list of shortstops who are free agents at the end of the year...as you can see there's not one under 30, and only about 5 of them are starting material. looks like we're stuck with Lugo.

Not necessarily. If we have to, we have potential trade pieces in our system, and not just the big 5 of Reddick, Buchholz, Bowden, Masterson and Anderson either.

With the amount of infield depth the Angels have, I 'd love to see them pry away Maicer Izturis for example. He's an adequate starter or one heck of a bench player and he probably doesn't cost us anything we can't afford to lose.

Or if the Angels decide they want to keep Izturis, why not take a flyer on Aybar, who's sort of trapped between Izturis and Sean Rodriguez? Or see if you can salvage Brandon Wood? Or go to the Dodgers and see if they're willing to discuss a Chin-Lung Hu trade?

Sure, no question of that. This is predicated on the idea that Lowrie is out for awhile.

And I would definitely hope Theo has felt the Angels out about Brandon Wood. He's an interesting gamble as a guy who can be picked up for less than he's worth, you can still stash him in the minors (for now!) and we're weakest at the two positions Wood knows how to play -- SS and 3B.

we're weak at 3B for now. when Kotsay gets back we have Youk who can play there once a week and Kotsay can play 1B, but until Kotsay gets back the idea of Wood isn't a terrible one.

You are making the part in bold up, right?

He had an excellent spring with the Angels, and his start to the season in AAA has been stellar. Also, this is the Angels we are talking about. They've held on to their prospects in miserly fashion, even the run of the mill ones. Wood looks like a future superstar.

The problem is, he's running out of time, because the Angels have refused to give him any opportunities in the form of extended play in the Majors.

I disagree. They've got him where he can continue to work on his main flaw, a tendancy to K a lot.

He's a year away. Figgins is 31, and his main asset, speed, will start to decline soon. He's a career .744 OPS player manning a CIF spot. That won't last. Wood will push him into the role he really should be in, utility player / pinch runner.

As far as a ticking clock goes, he's got options this year and next. He's on the 40-man roster, so he's protected from the Rule V draft. They have time with him.

That said, I'd trade the overrated Figgins to a foolish team right now, and let Wood adjust his game to the ultimate level.

Wood's upside rating is the second highest in prospects at the moment, behind only LaPorta. We would have to give up a fair bit for him, it would be a dumb deal anyway.

*shrug* Fine then, it's not like that was the only idea I brought up in my post. Point is there's no shortage of middle infield options in trade if all we need is a guy who's better over the course of a season than Nick Green.

Any news on Lugo? I haven't heard anything but I don't always have my ear to the ground.

He was at Fenway today. He'll be going to Pawtuckett tomorrow to play a few games. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the majors by the weekend.

If Nick Green continues to play like he has, he might build up enough value for the Sox to get something of worth once Lowrie and Lugo are both ready to go(I would assume Green is the odd man out, unless Lugo or Lowrie is traded).

Is he a FA next year? If he is this is his chance to make a name for himself. That's good motivation to have, and jopefully the Red Sox benefit from it.:D

He's hitting .240 /.321 /.320 /.641. That's not going to make anyone pant after him. It might get him a look for someone on a utility man's contract next year but even that is stretching it.
