Wang looked very good early then flattened out the sinker in the 3rd. I wonder if it was fatigue since we had been wasting his built up endurance in the pen. We'll see. If this becomes a trend, then moving Hughes to the pen could have been the wrong move.

Translation: Wang is DOMINANT, ABSOLUTELY DOMINANT.....except for when he isn't.....but let's blame that on something beyond his control......so I can stroke myself to thoughts of him being DOMINANT, ABSOLUTELY DOMINANT.

Question: When Yankees ride the suck pony, is it ever the players' fault?

Wang's velocity is getting up there. I'm hoping two or three starts, and he's back up to his customary 95.

Wang's sucking.

It's not the velocity of the sinker, it's the fact that it's staying flat, and a sinker that stays flat stays in the mddle of the strike zone.

He was still throwing 93,94 in the 5th. I dont think it is a velocity issue anymore, but a location issue. He didnt look like he was finishing his pitches and instead of them sinking out of the zone, they were staying up and getting hit as the game went along. Laugh all you want sox fans, but this is actually good news for the yankees. Wang can throw mid 90s and he does still have the ridiculous sinker. I just think he got tired.

It was ok for a few innings. I'm more worried about his velocity than I am on the sink at this point. He needs the arm strength. His sinker doesn't have great break, just enough to make it effective at a high speed. He needs that speed, without it, it's a meatball. He was 92-93 all day. Two more MPH and he'll be fine, IMO.

He can throw it 100 MPH, but if that sinker has no break, it's getting hammered.

it had break early on. Listen, his issue early on was the fact that he was leaving his sinker up and it was 88mph. Early on, his sinker was 93-95 and it was down. As the game went along, the sinker came up. Fatigue my friend.

Yeah i was checking out Gameday for that game.

He had steady velocity throughout the game.

What he started to do was miss hs spots with it.

you were gamecasting' date=' right? So you didnt actually watch the game[/quote']

I have MLB.TV premium.

I was watching the Sox game, the Yankee game and the Minessota game all at once.

Not only that.

The radar gun on gameday is 100 times more accurate than the one on tv.

So stop bullshitting with me , douchebag.

I am just saying that gamecast isnt always accurate with their location

The mlb.com gameday application is usually more accurate than the umpires.

I love this...Jacko and DipreG arguing over watching the game. f***ing priceless.

Wang's sinker had less break later on DipreG. Gamecast won't show you break, just location of pitch. It's like watching Mo's cutter on Gamecast. That pitch 4 inches outside started on the corner.

I woudn't expect you to realize that, since you don't watch the game...you GAMECASTZZZ the gamezzz. LOL!

I was watching the day you dimwit.

And just for reference, gameday DOES show pitch break.

I have no idea what s this gamecast you keep talking about.

Gamecast is the ESPN in-game flash player. Could have sworn somebody warned us about using ESPN for discussion and analysis. Anyone remember who that was?

Hilarious. Foot meet mouth.

Anyway, Gameday is the MLB flash player, and it's pitch displays are linked to MLB's pitch f/x system. If one were so inclined to use the data from pitch f/x, you could go to brooksbaseball.net, and you could look at his pitch type charts.

Here's the horizontal x vertical movement chart.

http://brooksbaseball.net/pfx/break.php?xml=http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2009/month_06/day_04/gid_2009_06_04_texmlb_nyamlb_1//pbp/pitchers/425426.xml&batterX=0&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=2

Vertical break is measured relative to a ball without spin traveling at the pitch velocity. So pitches with backspin (four-seamers, two-seam sinkers, changeups) have a positive vertical break because their magnus force makes the ball move less vertically than one without spin would. Pitches with forespin (sliders, curves) have negative break relative to a no spin ball.

If you look at the group of blue pitches (sinkers), the top group were the ones thrown in innings 1 & 2 (at about 5" positive vertical break). The lower group (in the 2" to 4" range) were thrown after. That means the ball was sinking more later in the game. He was getting sink.

But look at his overall location chart by pitch type....

http://brooksbaseball.net/pfx/location.php?xml=http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2009/month_06/day_04/gid_2009_06_04_texmlb_nyamlb_1//pbp/pitchers/425426.xml&batterX=0&innings=yyyyyynnn&sp_type=1&s_type=2

Only one of those sinkers thrown in the strikezone occurred in innings 1 & 2. So, while he was getting more sink, he was throwing the pitches in a poorer location.

Watching the games indeed. Look at the conclusions reached watching the games. It doesn't match the reality of what happened. This isn't to say that watching the games is worthless, but any analysis should be a mix of observation and analysis, with the analysis side utilizing objective data.

Yanks get a break facing Tampa without Longoria. Once you take that monster out of the lineup' date=' they are ... well...the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.[/quote']

They've got Price on the mound though.

And when that kid's on his game......well.....he's just f***ing filthy.

ORS, question...

I use brooksbaseball.net, however there are two things that I can't find (I understand this is probably a stupid question). How do you get the charts that are color coded to show what the pitch types are, and how do you get the charts that are color coded to show what happened on each pitch (called strike, swinging strike, ball, in play, etc.)?

Did you type that with Sabathia's balls in your mouth?

Not possible, he was in NY warming up while I am in Mass. But yes, Sabathia is better.

Couple points.

David Price is damn near unhittable. He throws very, very hard and that slider was clocked as high as 92mph. His stuff is very RJ like. But, as with most power pitchers, he can be waited out and we have him at 77 pitches through 4. He might not get past 5 and definitely wont be going past 6 leaving us a few innings against the soft underbelly of the Rays pen.

ARod is on a mission today. Goes yard off Price for our only hit. Then walks, steals second, takes third on an error and scores on a ball he should not have scored on. He is using his legs, which is a good sign

Other than that, CC has been great and Price has been fun to watch
