I was talking to a friend who is a coach for a minor league team and who played in college in the early 80's.

He's been around guys who've been in baseball since the 60's and says the general thought is that 'roids were being used in baseball throughout the 70's, then picked up steam in the late 80's and today there's just more high-tech stuff being used.

I wouldn't doubt Brett could have dabbled, I've always suspected Ortiz, and I really don't care.

Holy crap that was vicious
It was inspired by a bad day at work. I find that being vicious to Yankee fans helps me cope. Gom is a good sport. He can take it as well as dish it out.

All well and good. That said, the "he got bigger from age 21 to age (6 or more years later)" observation needs to die. Save a few people who appear on The Biggest Loser, this is true of everyone, particularly athletes engaged in weight training programs.

Especially for someone like Ortiz whose sole purpose is to hit. He may not be as concerned about his body fat percentage as some other ballplayers out there.

It's not like he has a small frame where it is unnatural to carry the added weight. He has a huge frame. When he retires he'll be 1 cookies short of 350 lbs within a year. Some smallish guys need help putting on weight and keeping it on. Ortiz has no such problem.
