Melky has been on the block for awhile. I never saw the optimism about him. He looked at best a 4th OF IMO.

Wasn't there someone on here who was trying to argue Melky being a HOF caliber player a while back?

Posted
hopefully not. He has little power and doesn't hit for average all that well. Basically useless' date='[/b'] good arm, that's about it.

That's a bit harsh.

He can be a great backup OFer of decent regular in many a team other than the Yankees, since he can play great defense, has a plus arm, and can hit worth his weight.

He's simply not an everyday player on a powerhouse like the Yanks.

Hopefully that option doesn't present itself because Austin Jackson will be doing so well patrolling Center Field at Yankee Stadium :D

But I thought Melky was your homeslice, the Man? How quickly the truth about his ability has eroded your irrational love, and now it's on to Jackson. Hope, for your sake, his granny in ST notwithstanding, that there is more merit to this flavor of the week.

I still think Melky can be a starter in the bigs. I just dont think it can be with us. He handled the #9 slot in our order very well for 2 yrs. But once we asked him to hit at the top of the order or up in the 6 or 7 slot, he couldnt handle it. I think a deal to a complete non contender will revamp his image and make him a usefull ballplayer. But right now, he is useless in NY. He needs an attitude adjustment.

Has anyone seen him play in spring training? He's always been a fat f***. Despite that, he's played some very good defense in CF. Maybe if he put some work into his conditioning he could at least be average offensively, and very good defensively.

Once he took the reigns in 2007, he's been a good defender with a cannon for an arm. Also, he's hitting well this ST. Like I said before, he's a good player in the right circumstance. Just not here.

Melky is my homeboy. A-Jax is just better, I've never tried to debate otherwise. I know what melky is, but I like him. I would love for him to remain a Yankee as a 4th OF or soemthing with Jackson being the everyday center fielder for the forseeable future.

Girardi officially announced that Gardner has won the CF competition. Girardi touted his strong finish to last yr and his solid spring when making the announcement. I did not actually remember how he finished the yr, so here it is.

20-71 8BB 13K 4-2B 2-3B 8SB. That comes out to .281/.354/.422 after his recall in August. I would take that over a season, absolutely 100%.

If its 2007 Reggie Willits, then sign me the hell up. Granted, Gardner is much faster and would steal a s***-ton more bases, but I'd take a .391OBP. You would absolute hate Gardner if he put up a Willits circa 2007 season.

Because both are white with a lot of speed?

Willits barely plays CF.

Joey Gathwright is a way better comparison tool wise and they followed an almost identical career path.

Joey Gathright sucks. Reggie Willits can't even hit a ball out of the infield. If these are comparisons that are being made to Gardner, I hope he lives up to the hype.

...and then pitchers figured him out, which is what pitchers will do to Gardner. He has ZERO pop. I hope he's your starting CF all season long.

He's hitting for some pop this spring training. Granted, it is ST, but they did tinker with his swing during the 2007 season leading to a bit more power. It paid off with his highest SLG of his career in the minors last yr. That being said, he is a guy who I'd be shocked if he reached double digit homers at any point in his career. But he wont be as big an offensive weakling as he is billed. And the pitchers can adjust, that much is certain. But even if we get just one yr out of him with a .350+OBP, you'll be pissed. Then, we could move him while the stock is high so that the real prospect, Jackson could take the stage.

Gathwright doesnt get on base at all.

Neither does Gardner

Look at the stats in the minors and look at what he did after he was called up the second time before you make a stupid comment like that. If we went off first impressions, Pedroia would be pumping gas right now and Jacoby Ellsbury would have won 2 MVPs by now.

71 AB sample size?

13 K in 71 AB is atrocious for a guy who's supposed to be a contact hitter.

Nobody ever said he was a contact hitter. Kilo, he is what he is. He takes a ton of pitches. It leads to high K rates. It also leads to a lot of BBs and with his speed, BBs might as well be doubles. Listen, i dont think he's gonna be a top flight CFer, but to be a cog in our machine, he doesnt have to be. All we need is a .350OBP and I'll be happy. And throughout his minor league career, he's provided that at all levels. And he provided that when he returned after his initial cup of coffee. I'd take .281/.354/.422 all yr long from this kid.

MLB pitchers aren;t going to walk him. They're going to challenge him, like they did Ellsbury last season.

He will have an OBP around .320 and an average around .260. If you will take a .260 singles hitter more power to you.

That's pretty optimistic, I can live with that in the 9th hole. After A-Rod comes back and IF everyone stays healthy you can hide him there.
