Heard this topic on WFAN this afternoon. Interesting question amidst all of the ARod drama - people all the time say how "lucky" the Red Sox are that the players union did not approve the trade for Alex Rodriguez. My question is - what set the wheels in motion for ARod to become a Yankee? Easy answer - Boone tears his ACL playing a game of pickup basketball.

But did this get set in motion before then? Would the Yankees trade away a home grown talent who hit a game winning HR in Game 7 of a World Series? If the HR stands up, are the Yanks as eager to dump Soriano as they were in early 2004?

I say no - Soriano was exposed at this point but he has still developed into one of the few 5 tool players in the game today. Can you imagine what the Yanks would be like if he was manning CF for them?

I ask you, Talksox. Weigh in on this topic.

Soriano is, at best, a 4-tool player. His lifetime average is .282, he's losing his speed, and have you seen him in left field lately?

I think Boone tearing his ACL was the what put Rodriguez in pinstripes.

Any GM, especially one of the Yankees, would be swap Soriano for Rodrrguez 10/10. The ones that couldn't would be the ones that couldn't afford it. Cashman can't use that excuse.

Not that I remember the specific details of what happened back then but once the Yankees were made aware that Rodriguez was available, would having a third baseman that hit .254 for them really have stopped them from getting A-Rod?

It's an interesting question though, Yankees love their supposed "heroes" and I'm not sure they could have swung an ARod deal without giving up Soriano.

Yeah but it has to be to an extent. Even looking at Aaron Boone (not the best example since he wasn't a very good player), but he wouldn't be there too long even without his injury. We'll never know what they would have done, but I would bet a home run like that wouldn't block one of the best players.

Besides, we're forgetting the most important reason the Yankees acquired A-Rod.....to screw the Red Sox. Had they not made every conceivable effort to pry A-Rod away from the Rangers, he would have become a Red Sox afterwards, and the "curse" would be approaching year 91.

I think the Red Sox don't win it all in 2004 or 2007 with A-Rod in their payroll, but that's just my humble opinion.

His post-season shortcomings plus taking on Magglio Ordonez's injury plagued 04-06 might have hindered the Sox enough in the long run, that they might have been still trying to regroup, but hey, it's just an opinion.

The Yankees' biggest reason to get Rodriguez definitely was not to "screw the Sox."

Well then, let me rephrase.

They were going to jump to jump at the chance to get the best player in baseball anyway, and screwing the Sox over was the icing on the cake.

Better?

They had a hole at 3B and when they found out the best player in all of baseball was available to fill it, they jumped at the chance. The move just happened to cause a lot of angst in RSN

Yes, the trade would have been made.

Remember, Soriano's woes in the post-season came up after 2001....the trade was 3 years later.

I see TheKilo's point, however I tend to agree with this one. The Yankees had images of Soriano flailing at pitches way out of the strike zone in the 2003 playoffs. He was particularly terrible in game 7 versus the Red Sox. Obviously they weren't going to go out and look to trade Soriano, but when presented with the opportunity to swap him for Alex Rodriguez it would have been a no-brainer no matter what.
